When I was nineteen years old, I was faced with a choice that changed my life.

Keep the safety of what I already knew or risk losing everything with the young, hotheaded soldier who stole my heart.

I chose the wrong man, and for seventeen years, I paid in tears, blood, and shattered dreams for that decision.

Now, there’s a man in my house, holding a gun to my head on the order of my ex-husband—given from his prison cell.

That hotheaded soldier I was too afraid to choose? He’s now a six-foot-three wall of muscle who works at the country’s most premier bodyguard agency. I’ve always wanted him, but now, I’ve never needed him more.

It’s the call I’m terrified to make.

I’m sure he still hates me… Even though I’ve never stopped loving him.

Review

Lark may be one of the older guys around the Guardian agency, but he is certainly not someone that you want to mess with. He has had his heart broken and stepped on when he was a teenager and it broke him all the way until he is a man. But all that gets thrown away when she enters back in his life in need of help.

Mira has made a lot of mistakes in her life and the biggest one is letting Lark go. It was intriguing to see how one bad decision led into the cluster that became her life. Things just kept getting worse and worse no matter what she did. And the life that she thought she knew was only a façade for something that was so much bigger then her.

There is a lot of back and forth in the beginning for this couple as we see how they fell and love and how they broke up. I liked seeing glimpses of that. We got to see more of the dynamic of their relationship and explain how they got to be to where they are. I wish we would have seen more of that because I definitely would like to have seen more of Lark’s past, especially how he got with his ex wife and his two daughters. There is a great story there that we don’t really get to see.

Mira knows that Lark is the man that she should have been with her whole life but it’s one of those things that she didn’t think that they could be happy together. I found it rather annoying that she didn’t choose him as a young adult and I wish that we could have seen more of the reason why she stayed with a man that abused her instead of going with Lark. I think that I can figure it out, but I would have like to have seen Martinez elaborate on that in the story.

There are a lot of things that were left unanswered or qets quickly glossed over that I didn’t like, but overall the story was good. It wasn’t one of my favorite books of hers, but definitely a good addition to this story. If at the very least, it made me very excited to read Johnson’s story.

AVERY

I need somewhere to wipe my palms; but the puffy skirt of my designer gown doesn’t seem appropriate.

“Avery Capulet, everyone!”

Five hundred pairs of eyes look my way as I sashay down the middle of the glass-ceilinged ballroom my father has decked out with nauseating arrays of flowers, of twinkling fairy lights and enough champagne to fill the San Francisco Bay that shimmers beyond the heights of our palatial hotel.

Really, that’s what it’s called: The Palatial Hotel. Because it’s like a damn palace built on the edge of the financial district, full of Austrian crystal chandeliers and Calacatta marble floors.

It’s unseasonably hot in San Francisco this year, especially since we’re in the middle of a heat wave. People in Southern California would probably laugh at us as they roast through their regular hundred-plus summer days, but in the North we’re a little more used to clouds and fog.

I could blame my sweaty palms on the heat wave, but it’s crisp and cold inside the hotel’s grand glass enclosure. Cold like a refrigerator. Like a morgue.

You’re daydreaming again, Avery.

I take a deep breath and focus on my father’s booming voice, forgetting about the crowd of family and my father’s friends. I feel like a head of cattle being marched through a market to fetch the highest bidder. Because although this is merely my twenty-fifth birthday and not an auction, almost everybody is here for one reason.

Money.

My money.

The money that, according to the antiquated rules of our family’s trust, cannot be accessed by women heirs until they marry.

Which is complete fucking bullshit. We’re living in the age of equality, yet, according to the Capulet decree, all women born bearing the Capulet name would be penniless unless they marry a man of their father’s choosing.

Arranged marriage in the twenty-first century? In America?

I almost wish somebody in the crowd would shoot me, put me out of my misery.

“Think of all that money,” I hear somebody whisper as I walk through the middle of a parted crowd. I look in the direction of the voice, finding a guilty face staring straight back at me. Jacob Goldstein. Preppy guy, Ivy League, all that crap that people spend their lives and their fortunes making sure they’ve got. I went to high school with Jacob, the most exclusive prep school on the West Coast of the United States. He’s been trying to get into my pants since his voice broke and I grew out of my sports bra. Sorry, buddy, you were never on my shortlist.

Yes, I am the only child of the most powerful man in California. Daddy has enough collective money and assets to rival anyone on the Forbes rich list, but he prefers to be discreet with his fortune. If for no other reason than the fact that his wealth isn’t entirely honest. The Capulet family is the Rothschild family of the criminal underworld. Instead of owning and controlling banks, we own and control other things. Diamonds. Guns. Drugs. People. The crisp Benjamins in our vaults might be legal tender, but they likely weren’t obtained through legal channels.

And yes, we own hotels. Lots and lots of hotels. After all, you have to launder the money somewhere, right?

My family has so much money, you could never spend it all. It’s not in any one account, or controlled by any one person, but we have enough money to burn piles of the stuff as tall as this building, and not miss it at all.

Many of the men eyeing me off in the crowd find that staggering wealth extremely attractive.

Me, I learned a long time ago that money doesn’t mean much. Beyond granting you food, and shelter, and warmth, money doesn’t do much at all. It doesn’t hold you at night when your father is still working, always working. It doesn’t help you trust anybody who might be a romantic possibility.

Money doesn’t bring your mother back from the dead after she dies giving birth to your stillborn brother when you’re twelve years old. It doesn’t help you understand why your older sister drowned in your backyard when she was about to be married off, leaving you to inherit the burden of everything she was better equipped to handle than you will ever be.

Money: I’m about to have more of it than any of these greedy fucks could imagine.

And I don’t want it.

Not a nickel. Not a penny. Not a dirty dollar bill.

But for my father, I will take it. I will assume the throne of the Capulet family. It’s my destiny, whether I want it or not.

Cover designer: Letitia Hasser, RBA designs
Cover Model: Lucas Garcez
Cover Photography: Sven Jacobsen

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new, sexy standalone novel.

Growing up, the three of us were friends.

He was the nerd.

I was the playboy.

She was the beauty.

Deep down, I only ever wanted her. I kept it inside because Rory and I made a pact that our friend, Amber, was off-limits.

He lied.

I went off to college, and he got the girl.

Amber never knew how I felt.

They were together for years—before he broke her heart.

Through it all and across the miles, she and I casually stayed in touch.

When my job sent me to Boston for a three-month contract position, Amber let me stay in her spare room.

Still reeling from her breakup, she’d sworn off men.

One night, I opened her computer to find the shock of my life. She’d hesitantly contacted a male escort company. Afraid to date and get her heart broken again, she was looking for sex with no strings.

Every emotion imaginable ran through me: protectiveness, jealousy—curiosity.

Amber had chosen Gentleman Number Nine and sent him a message.

She opened up to him, confessing, among other things, her physical attraction to her friend— me. But she considered me off-limits—and she thought I was a manwhore. (Ironic, considering the circumstances.)

Eventually, she set up a date to meet Gentleman Nine at a hotel.

When she showed up several nights later to meet him, she got the surprise of her life to see me standing there—with an offer I hoped she wouldn’t refuse.

My relationship with Hunter Delucia started backwards.

We met at a wedding—him sitting on the groom’s side, me sitting on the bride’s. Stealing glances at each other throughout the night, there was no denying an intense, mutual attraction.

I caught the bouquet; he caught the garter. Hunter held me tightly while we danced and suggested we explore the chemistry sparking between us. His blunt, dirty mouth should’ve turned me off. But for some crazy reason, it had the opposite effect on me.

We ended up back in my hotel room. The next morning, I headed home to New York leaving him behind in California with the wrong number.

I thought about him often, but after my last relationship, I’d sworn off of charming, cocky, gorgeous-as-sin men. A year later, Hunter and I met again at the birth of our friends’ baby. Our attraction hadn’t dulled one bit. After a whirlwind trip, he demanded a real phone number this time. So I left him with my mother’s—she could scare away any man with her talks of babies and marriage—and flew back home.

I’d thought it was funny, until the following week when he rang the bell at Mom’s house for Sunday night dinner. The crazy, gorgeous man had won over my mother and taken an eight-week assignment in my city. He proposed we spend that time screwing each other out of our systems.

Eight weeks of mind-blowing sex with no strings attached? What did I have to lose?

Nothing, I thought.

It’s just sex, not love.

But you know what they say about the best laid plans…

Review: ‘Broken Course’ by Aly Martinez – Sarah tries to move on from her past

Format: e-book, paperback
Format read: e-book on Kindle Unlimted
Series: book 2 of Wrecked and Ruined series
Rating: 18+ sexual content, language
Genre: Contempory Romance
Goodreads page: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/19169762-broken-course

I am going to admit that I was a little skeptical of this story because of the way that Sarah was portrayed in the previous books. With that said, I am glad that we did get a book for Sarah because now I get her side of the story. Yes there are things that make her a little cuckoo but knowing where she is coming from and seeing that she too can get past what happened and find love is a full circle ending for me.

Leo’s problems go deeper then the ocean. We touched upon them slightly with Slate’s book and his relationship with Erica. He seems to be the exact person that Sarah needs to get over the problems that she’s had, but the question remains to be seen if his problems will be too much for her.

While I am glad that we got to dive in to Sarah’s past, there were times that I got a little lost in the world. I was expecting more explanation to why she did the things that she did, but we didn’t really see too much of that. Also, there were times when Leo spoke Spanish that it wasn’t translated and while it’s not a big deterrent for some people, it slowed me down when I would have to go to Google translator to translate what he was saying.

For the romance part, it is definitely full of passion and lust. They are truly a ying to the other one’s yang. What they both need from the other they are able to find and we get to reap the lovely benefits of those lust filled moments.

Overall, I liked how the story came full circle for the people involved with the characters, though I would love to see what happens with Eli and Casey. Especially after some of the things were talked about in this story.

Morgan finally gets Patrick to open up in ‘The Wright Secret’ by KA Linde

A new brother’s-best-friend stand alone romance by USA Today bestselling author K.A. Linde…

I was just his best friend’s little sister.

But he was always more than that to me.

After twelve years of pining over Patrick’s easy smile, baby blues, and captivating charm, I decide to take matters into my own hands—and completely blow my chance.

Who knew a self-proclaimed manwhore would decide to be a gentleman the first time I’m naked in his bed? Definitely, not me. But when I land there again, neither of us has any intention of stopping.

There’s only one problem: nobody can know. Especially not my three older brothers. If they found out, all hell would break loose.

So I’m willing to keep our secret. Because I want him Wright here, right now.

Review

Morgan Wright may be the younger sister to the Wright boys, but she is not someone who just stands by and watches someone else take the lead. She is now taking on being CEO of Wright construction while fighting with the love that she has for Patrick. Can someone really have their cake and eat it too?

I love getting more into the character of Morgan. We have seen her bits and pieces from the first three books. We get to see an insight to women in the workplace and what it can be like for a woman when she has power. I loved how Linde touches on (whether intentionally or not) and considering what’s going on in the world, it is a very relative theme that I love that was addressed. Morgan has to prove her worth not only to the board members, but also to herself.

Patrick finally opens his eyes in this one and finally admits that Morgan is more then just his best friend’s little sister. He falls for her for who she is and supports her life and her dream of being the best CEO she can be. I liked reading the ack and forth between Patrick and Morgan especially when she is trying to keep her walls up and keep him an arm’s length away.

There is no cliffhanger in the story and ends with a HEA. So you don’t need to worry about any of that.

While it’s not officially announced (or at least from what I can see) the next book is probably going to involve David and Sutton. And I know that if/when she does do that book, it’s going to be the most heartbreaking.
