The story is about 22 year-old Lily who is returning home after breaking up with her abusive boyfriend. She is not looking for any kind of relationship, but can’t deny her feelings for her new neighbor, Jay.
Jay Lincoln is a large scary man that intimates everyone who comes in contact with him, including Lily.
They both know that they shouldn’t pursue a relationship but they can’t stop themselves. They are both feeling things they have never felt before and neither one wants to deny it.
Trouble comes as Jay keeps his life and his body full of scars a secret from Lily. Stubborn as she is keeps pushing and perusing until she sees who he really is.
She knows she should be afraid of him but only feels strong and safe. How can they let go of the one weakness that makes life with living?
Lily isn’t like the other heroines that we usually read in Romance novel. She is stubborn, strong-willed and is it not a weak female character that needs the man to save her.
Jay is very rough around the edges and doesn’t let anyone in. He was reluctant to let Lily in but once he did he couldn’t let her go.
The relationship between Jay and Lily was passionate, caring, and realistic. Yes they were attracted to one another and that led them to hanging out, but it took time for them to trust one another and fall in love. A lot of times in Romance novels they just jump right in to the relationship so they can hurry up with all the stages (meet, fall in love, break up, make up). This one covered all those stages but at a slow and steady pace.
The thrilling/suspenseful aspect of the book made the romance part all that more entertaining. You get to learn about Jay’s past as Lily does and make your own assumptions about him. He’s got a dark history and has many skills that cause you to wonder why and where it all came from.
Overall, it was a very enjoyable read. A perfect book to read while on vacation and easy enough so it can be done in one sitting. While there is a part 2 there isn’t a giant cliffhanger ending in this one (which is always a plus for a series when the 2nd book is not out yet).
