Book review: “Safe with Me” by Kristen Proby – moving story of a man coping with demons from his past

safe with me

Format: ebook, paperback

In this book, we follow Caleb Montgomery as he fights against his own demons as he falls in love with Brynna. She comes from a dark past of her own as she is a witness to her ex-husband’s murder. She moves to Seattle for safety with Caleb leading the charge.

This story offers a different element in the series that we haven’t seen before. It’s thrilling and there is a bit of a mystery element to it as we don’t know what’s going to happen to Caleb and Brynna from day to day. Also, there are kids involved as Brynna has two daughters before she starts hooking up with Caleb.

Caleb has a lot of demons of his own that he’s trying to deal with. He just left the Navy SEALS because the last mission that he worked on caused the death of some the fellow soldiers in his platoon. He, like the other guys in the story, thinks that he’s not good enough for the woman that he loves. In his case, it’s more understandable then some of the other guys. He has nightmares and suffers from PTSD and considering what happened, it makes sense that he would feel that way.

Brynna has never felt more alive then she has when Caleb entered her life. He’s always tried to keep her at a distance but she’s fought hard against him to prove that he is worthy of love and of being happy. The only thing that she’s ever wanted was to feel safe and she’s never felt more safe then being with Caleb.

While this story is a romantic story, it focuses more on the story of Caleb and less on the romance. There are enough scenes to keep you satisfied with the romantic side of the story, but it’s the development of Caleb that really helps with the story. We have learned some things about him from the previous books that helped set this book up and it’s amazing ot watch as he comes to grips with the ghosts of his past.

What Proby does well with the series is the continuity of it. While there is a different focus with each story, you still get glimpses of the other characters that we have met in previous books. In this story, there is twist in the series as we learn something that shakes the entire Montgomery family. It proves that not everything is as perfect as things may appear on the surface.

Overall, this series is a nice follow up to the last book (which is still the best book in the series so far). It touches on a sensitive subject as PTSD and it’s handled in a fashion where it explains how horrible it can be, but not offer to much detail to shy us away from the story.

Rating: B-
