Series: book 1 of Sins series
Rating: 18+ for language, dark themes, sexual content
In the first book of a new series by Jessica Sorensen, we jump into the world of the mafia as we get a touch of a thrilling and romance as Lola goes on the run after she fails at killing someone in order to save her father.
We see the tragedy of what can happen when living in a family in the mafia. You are born into it but don’t have the choice of leaving it. The story focuses on the children having to deal with the mistakes of the parents and the decisions that have to be made when the backs are against the wall.
Lola has had to make some tough decisions in order to try and remain under the radar and growing up in a mafia with her mother dying right in front of her has broken something inside of her. She is numb to the world and the only time she feels anything is with Layton. And then he’s taken from her and she’s left with nothing.
What took away from this story is the lack of real development of the main characters, Lola and Layton. We get bits and pieces throughout the story, but you can’t really feel that connection that they have and understand why they do what they do for one another. It’s hard to agree with or accept them willing to throw away everything for one another without feeling that connection.
Other people/reviewers think that Lola is a bit whiney. And yes she can be at times but considering she is an only child who used to have the world at her feet and then have everything taken from her. The whiney isn’t so bad where you don’t like her and it’s not as annoying when you think of it in the grand scheme of things.
Overall, it’s a quick fast paced thrilling novel, which is something that Sorensen hasn’t really touched on before. It can be graphic at times which is another change of pace but it still an enjoyable read. There is a little bit of a cliffhanger ending so be prepared for that.
