It comes as no surprise that the first book in the NY Times best selling Fifty Shades trilogy by EL James, Fifty Shades of Grey, is the number one movie Valentine’s Day weekend.
But the movie did not just top the box office. Oh no. With the estimated $81 million opening weekend it had, it allowed director Sam Taylor-Johnson to have the biggest opening for a female director beating out Twilight‘s Catherine Hardwicke at $69 million.
The movie not only did well here in America but in foreign box office bringing in an estimated $158 million giving the total opening box office to $239.6 million. Not bad for a bunch of up and comers.
The other new movie. Kingsmen: Secret Service, also did well in its first week bringing in an estimated $35.6 million. The movie was a favorite to those who completely were turned off of Grey.
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water falls from the top spot but still does well bringing in an estimated $30.5 million. The movie should cross the $100 million mark by the end of the week.
Rounding out the top five is American Sniper with an estimated $16.4 million and Jupiter Ascending with an estimated $9.4 million.
For the rest of the box office, you can go here.
Fifty should remain on at the top for a few weeks not getting any big competition until Insurgent comes out at the end of March.
