In this story, we meet Max as he makes a deal with Emma that they pretend to be engaged so that he can get his trust fund. Sounds simple right? But things get complicated once feelings get involved.

Emma is moving to New York in hopes of following her dreams and she makes a deal with Max because she needs his money. Max doesn’t want to be married because of something he experienced as a kid but he wants his trust fund so that he can get out from his father’s thumb. On the surface, it would seem like an easy deal, but obviously feelings will get involved and it complicates the whole deal.

The story of a proposed ‘deal’ of pretending to be a couple so that one or the other can benefit has been done before, but this story has a little bit of a twist. The problem is that it doesn’t occur until about two thirds of the way into the book but once it happens, you won’t be able to stop until you get to the end.

I do like that after Emma and Max have a falling out, Emma just doesn’t take him back, but at the same time, I got frustrated with her because her reasoning was just crazy. I get that you don’t want to just take him back because he broke your heart, got it, but some of the decisions she made just seem too much.

As the story comes to an end, I am happy to say that it does have a happy ending, but it does take a little while to get there. There are going to be some sensitive subjects that may make your eyes tear up, so be prepared for that to happen towards the end of the book. There were a lot of questions that were left unanswered that I wish Lynn had a prologue included so that she could answer those questions. Especially since this is a stand-alone novel.

Rating: C+
