‘Pan’ flops while ‘The Martian’ tops box office

One of the most anticipated movies of the month, Pan, didn’t fare so well as Disney had expected. The movie which cost $150 million to make, was only able to bring in an estimated $15.5 million. It didn’t fare much better on Rotten Tomatoes where it’s considered ‘rotten’ at a 25% approval rating. It doesn’t look like the movie is going to fair much better as more movies are set to come out to grab people’s attention.

The Martian is once again the top movie to be seen this weekend as it brings in an estimated $37 million. The movie is getting more and more attention from fans as word of mouth is spreading about the movie. It currently sits at $108 million total for domestic and looks to continue to climb as it doesn’t get any big competition until November.

Jonathan (Andy Samberg) and Mavis (Selena Gomez) in Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation's HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2.

Hotel Transylvania 2 also crosses over the $100 million mark this week as it brought in an estimated $20.3 million. The movie is still not doing as well as expected (considering how popular the first movie was) but with it coming out around Halloween, it is helping its box office total. The Intern and Sicario round out the rest of the top five with an estimated $8.6 million and $7.3 million respectively. For the rest of the box office, you can go here.

There are three big movies set to come out this weekend. Goosebumps (which is already getting good reviews) should draw in the fans of the book and their families, while Bridge of Spies and Crimson Peak should draw more of an adult crowd. With Halloween just around the corner, expect some of these Halloween-themed movies to jump a bit at the box office.
