In the latest book from Nicholas Sparks, we follow him as he goes down a new road that he hasn’t done before by combining MMA fighter, Colin, who meets and falls in love with Maria, a lawyer who is trying to make a name for herself. They meet under unusual circumstances but as they get to know one another, they find that they shouldn’t trust a book by its cover. Maria tries to prove that she has what it takes to be a lawyer, even if it means putting her life at risk and Colin is on his last strike that he will give up if it means protecting her.
This book proves once again why Nicholas Sparks is one of the best Romance novels of this generation. He is able to adapt his writing and his characters to the changing times and keep them feeling fresh and new. This book is that perfect example. Colin is part of a MMA fighting organization (which something that is quickly rising in popularity) and he uses the rough around the edges look to him to be the romantic hero. Not only thought, he has very autistic characteristics that may be not be noticed by someone who doesn’t know what to look for.
Maria feels like she has a lot to prove with being a lawyer who comes from two immigrant parents. They have been able to make a living out of their restaurant, but she wanted more. Unfortunately, with the fact that she is a pretty woman trying to make it ‘in a man’s world’ she finds herself at the end of some people that need to be put into place, which include one of her co-workers.
Colin is not the typical romantic lead that we have seen from Sparks as he has some form of autism or ADD. But he has the whole bad boy thing going as well as he has tattoo and is a MMA fighter. He has made some mistakes in the past and is looking to rectify them and be a better person for Maria. This character proves just why Sparks is so successful. He can change to the times and create these characters that are relevant with today’s society. Not only with Colin but with Maria’s sister Serena as well.
With the fact that Colin is a MMA fighter, you can predict that this is not going to be some kind of dramatic climax, but more of an explosive one. And Sparks delivered. While the climax isn’t as exciting as Safe Haven or The Guardian, it still was able to grab your attention and hold on to it until you were able to finish the book, especially since you really don’t know what happens until the epilogue.
Sparks is a writer who can create characters that you want to root for from start to finish. There may be times when you get frustrated with them but in the end you can’t help but love them. The relationship between Colin and Maria is quite different than the other books not because of their personalities, but their cultural differences.
Sparks proves that he does his research as we fall into the world and we get to experience the kind of lives other families have.
