When Emily Wayborn goes home to visit her mom while on hiatus from her hit TV show, she receives a voicemail from her former best friend, Amber. Though the two were once notorious party girls, they haven’t spoken in years. Although the message might sound benign to anyone else, Amber uses a safe word that Emily recognizes, a word they always used to get out of sticky situations during their wild days. And what’s more chilling than the voicemail: it turns out that Amber has gone missing.
Determined to track down her friend, Emily follows a chain of clues that lead her to the enigmatic billionaire Reeve Sallis, a hotelier known for his shady dealings and play boy reputation. Now, in order to find Amber, Emily must seduce Reeve to learn his secrets and discover the whereabouts of her friend. But as she finds herself more entangled with him, she finds she’s drawn to Reeve for more than just his connection to Amber, despite her growing fear that he may be the enemy. When she’s forced to choose where her loyalty lies, how will she decide between saving Amber and saving her heart?
In the first book of a new series, we follow Emily as she tries to find out what happened to her friend and she thinks that bad boy billionaire Reeve knows what happened. The more that she gets to know him and fall victim to his wicked ways, the more she starts to see that there is more to Amber’s history than she thought.
This book is a little different than the other books by Laurelin Paige as she goes deeper into the darker world of romance. Over the course of the book, we get to see the many layers of her past and how and why she is so concerned with trying to find Amber. While you may know that her and Reeve will connect over their preference of sex, you don’t know what the truth is about Amber.
Emily is not your typical heroine, that it’s to the point where you almost don’t want to call her that. She shows that she is very submissive and sometimes it’s a little bit of a turn off for the read. She is risking everything to try and find Amber, but when it gets tough, she just gives in and lets Reeve control her. What I don’t like is that there isn’t much of a reason why she is like that, just that she dabbled in it as a child and never got over it. Usually there is some kind of moment that gives that ‘ah so that’s why’ but we haven’t seen it in this book. Hopefully we do in the next book.
Reeve has his own problems that we will certainly dive deeper into in the next book. We tested the waters in this one and got a glimpse of his true colors and I am excited to see where Paige takes the story in the next book. Reeve is in a lot of ways like Christian Grey but the difference is he’s a lot more likeable as a character. With it being an erotic novel, of course there will be sex scenes. Just be warned that never ever sex scene is that pretty flowers and roses kind but is dark at times. There are some scenes that might be too much to read so be weary of that.
There is a cliffhanger ending, so be prepared for it. The whole book builds up for this big climatic ending and thankfully Paige delivers. There is an explosive fight between Reeve and Emily that leads them to rethink their whole plan with each other. The ending complicates things on so many levels for both of them that it’s going to be interesting to see how it plays out in the second book.

Laurelin Paige is the NY Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today Bestselling Author of the Fixed Trilogy. She’s a sucker for a good romance and gets giddy anytime there’s kissing, much to the embarrassment of her three daughters. Her husband doesn’t seem to complain, however. When she isn’t reading or writing sexy stories, she’s probably singing, watching Game of Thrones and the Walking Dead, or dreaming of Michael Fassbender. She’s also a proud member of Mensa International though she doesn’t do anything with the organization except use it as material for her bio.
