Excerpt

Reaching my SUV, I place her feet on the ground and cage her against the passenger door, bracing both my hands on either side of her head. “And what about you, Lia?” I ask, dipping my head in close to hers. “Hmm? You know my secrets. What about yours?”

She might not know all of mine but she knows enough.

“What is it you want to know?” she asks, a slight tremble in her voice.

“I want to know who you are and where you came from. But more than anything, I want to know what you’re hiding under that scarf.”

The stark pain that enters her eyes strikes me to my fucking core. “Trust me, you don’t want to see what’s under there. I can’t even bear to look at it myself.”

“Nothing scares me.”

It’s a complete lie. She scares the hell out of me.

A heavy silence descends upon us, her pretty eyes wide and fearful.

“What are you so afraid of?” I ask.

Her breath hitches, emotion shining bright in her gaze. “Everything.”

There’s so much despair in that one word that I want to fucking kill whoever put it there. Unable to resist, I gently drop my forehead on hers, my jaw locking as I restrain myself from doing what I really want to do.

“I’m going to respect your privacy…for now. But one day, you’re going to tell me who made you so afraid. And if they’re still breathing—they won’t be for much longer.”

Her eyes fall closed, lip trembling as she tries to shield her pain from me. “Some secrets, Kolan, are best left unknown.”

“Not between us. The day will come when there will be no more secrets between us.”

Her eyes open, locking with mine, but she remains silent. I press my lips to her forehead then reach for the door handle. “Come on. Let’s go home.”

Review

In this book we follow Kolan, the man that was accused and then cleared of rape, as he tries to clean up the mess that was made of his reputation and finds solace when he meets Sophie. Sophie is running from a demon in her past and when she meets Kolan instead of running from him (like other people do) she runs to him.

The book starts off with a bang when there is a lot of action. We quickly get to see what’s going on with Sophie and what forces her to run. A part of me was happy (not to read it) but to know what happened, but a part of me wasn’t. Sometimes I like it when you have to figure it out, but knowing allow me to see how that dynamic effects Kolan.

There is a scene in the book where they are dancing in the boxing ring and I literally melted when I read that scene. It was so beautiful and perfect that in just a few pages you fall in love with the characters. They have that moment that is usually only seen in the movies and what we all dream that we will have because it’s the first time that Kolan really lets Sophie see his vulnerable side. And for someone like him, that’s everything.

Sophie is the perfect kind of person that Kolan needs in his life. He doenst think that he is worthy of love or happiness and considering what we found out in An Act of Salvation with Katelyn and Kolan’s home life, it make senses. But Sophie is able to get him to see the light and see that he deserves love. Most of the book is showing them falling in love and it’s not just them having those love scenes. In fact, the first love scene isn’t until about three quarters of the book. I like that they spent more time falling in love so that when it happened, it happened in a big way.

Unlike the other books in this spin-off series, we don’t see too much of the original characters from Men of Honor series. I was sad to see this because I love those guys, but the glimpses that we do see, is enough to hold me over until we get to the other spin-off series.

Like the other books of the series, Kolan is going to melt your heart and grab your love because he is that sweet little puppy on the side of the road that you just want to take home and make your baby.
