“At 18 I had pennies, but money didn’t make me bold. At 19 I had dollars, but it didn’t dull the pain of being sold. At 20 I had hundreds, but then I met him and was found. At 21 I had thousands, but all I wanted was to be bound.”

“At 23 I had dollars, but life changed and made me rich. At 25 I had hundreds, but it wasn’t enough to stop my killing itch. At 27 I had thousands, but my reputation didn’t set me free. At 29 I had millions, but I met her and could finally see.”

Tasmin was killed on her 18th birthday. She had everything planned out. A psychology degree, a mother who pushed her to greatness, and a future anyone would die for. But then her murderer saved her life, only to sell her into a totally different existence.

Elder went from penniless to stinking rich with one twist of fate. His lifetime of crime and shadows of thievery are behind him but no matter the power he now wields, it’s not enough. He has an agenda to fulfil and he won’t stop until it’s complete.

But then they meet.

A beaten slave and a richly dressed thief. Money is what guided their separate fates. Money is what brought them together. And money is ultimately what destroys them.

She was poor.

He was rich.

Together…they were bankrupt.

Review

If you have read books from Pepper Winters before than you know that her stories are not the fairy tale kind of love stories. This book is just another example of that. There is no hero, no prince, and certainly no sweet happy ever after. Instead, this book is filled with villain after villain with no end in sight. Pim is a victim of a crime that is a very real issue in today’s world, human trafficking. This is not the first book that I have read that has had this issue, but this is the first book that I think actually captures the vicious nature of this ordeal. Having to endure being reduced to nothing, stripped of your freedom, your identity, no positive contact. I don’t know how she does it. But she does.

Pim is one of the strongest characters that I have read in a book. Right from the get go, she fights to get her freedom and no how many times she is kicked down and how hard she is pushed, she never gives up. She keeps fighting even after most (definitely including myself in that) would have given up because it would have been easier. While it’s forced her to have to go through some hellish things (because she goes through some things that I can’t even think about, let alone talk about) she has been able to stay alive and not give her captor the satisfaction of beating her.

This is not usually the kind of book that I would read. I have a hard time reading through books that deal with slave and issues such as forced sex but I read this book because while I may not want to think about it, it does remind me that it still exists. We have so much hatred and anger in our world today that it needs to be acknowledge because the more we ignore it, the longer it lives on. This book is definitely not for the faint at heart as it’s graphic at times. Ok, a lot of times its graphic. But I loved the dynamic of Pim’s and Master A’s relationship. As a Psychology major, I found it fascinating how she was able to stay true to herself and keep her mental stable and not break.

It’s no wonder that Elder Priest was fascinated with her.

Elder Priest has his own laundry list of problems. While there is a large part of me that was afraid of him, there was a part that was intrigued by him. I wanted to get to know him more and I had a soft spot for him because I knew that he was going to be the only one that could help Pim. And while the theme is dark and ominous, the positive person in me is hoping that she survives in the end. Time will only tell if Elder Priest is going to be her savior or another devil.

If you are not someone who likes scenes that deal with forced relations and graphic scenes that include, but not limited to, torture of sorts, then you won’t like this book. If you go into the book with an open mind and read the book like I did, then you will get far more out of it then I expected. It’s inspired me to think of a person’s psyche in another way and I wonder if whether or not we do have a breaking point.

Excerpt

“Do you always oppose the man in your bed or just me?” My hand lashed up, looping around her throat. “You just made me break the no touching rule so soon. Don’t make me break the other rules keeping me in line tonight.”

Her eyes locked onto mine, pooling with panicked uncertainty.

“Ah, that’s intrigued you.” Loosening my fingers, I didn’t threaten to throttle her, merely held softly, trapping her mind in her body rather than flying free. “I have many laws that run my life.” I bared my teeth. “Want to know a few?”

I waited for her to nod, to blink—to do something that could be a signal for yes.

But she was too good.

Or too terrified.

She’d gone iceberg white, her eyes as complex as snowflakes.

“You don’t like your neck being touched?” I removed more of my weight but didn’t withdraw my fingers. “Does he strangle you…is that why you’re looking at me as if I’ve grown horns?”

She didn’t respond in any way, but her pulse gushed like a riptide beneath my thumb. “Don’t focus on where I’m holding you. Focus on why I’m holding you.” My thumb caressed the side of her neck, tangling with the escaped hair I’d secured. “Focus on my questions.”

About the Author

Pepper Winters wears many roles. Some of them include writer, reader, sometimes wife. She loves dark, taboo stories that twist with your head. The more tortured the hero, the better, and she constantly thinks up ways to break and fix her characters. Oh, and sex… her books have sex.

She loves to travel and has an amazing, fabulous hubby who puts up with her love affair with her book boyfriends.
