Synopsis:

Truth: Penn Walker entered my life like a summer storm—dark, ominous, and filled with thunder.

After witnessing my husband’s murder, I didn’t have much of a heart left to offer a man.

But Penn took it all.

Every jagged shard.

Every broken bit.

Even the dirty and twisted pieces that I wish never existed.

Lie: I didn’t need him to save me.

Lie: I knew exactly who he was.

Lie: Losing him wouldn’t destroy me.

But that’s the thing about lies—you never know who to believe.

Review

This book. I don’t know where to begin with this one. There is so much that goes on in such a short period of time. I’m still trying to wrap my head around it. The story doesn’t cover a large period of time once it starts you won’t be able to put the story down. There are choices that Penn makes that will make you question whether or not you want to like him (because I certainly did) but he certainly redeems himself by the end of the story.

There is a couple scenes in this story that really stand out to me. The one that stands out the most is basically the big blow out between Penn and Cora was a great read. It was filled with turmoil, drama, pain, hurt, and I love that both parties were open and honest with one another. There are times when authors rush through this part and I like that Martinez took the time to really explore the problems they have a relationship and how it effects them later on in their relationship.

I am a big fan of when books have a strong female lead and Cora fits the bill in this story. She stands up for not only herself, but also the other girls in the house. But most importantly she doesn’t back down with Penn. She just doesn’t give in to his whim and challenges him. I like when the female lead has a backbone because I find those exchanges better.

The ending is a big OMG moment. There is so much that happens so quickly that you have to make sure that you are paying attention because you will miss a detail. Martinez also makes it so that she can set up the spin off series for this one so YES there is going to be more from this world.

AUTHOR INFORMATION:

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children.

Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and baked feta. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.
