And she’s inherited a legacy she knows nothing about from a family whose existence she’s never heard of. Until now.

Nicholas Carter is content with his life at sea, free from the Ironwoods—a powerful family in the colonies—and the servitude he’s known at their hands. But with the arrival of an unusual passenger on his ship comes the insistent pull of the past that he can’t escape and the family that won’t let him go so easily. Now the Ironwoods are searching for a stolen object of untold value, one they believe only Etta, Nicholas’ passenger, can find. In order to protect her, he must ensure she brings it back to them— whether she wants to or not.

Together, Etta and Nicholas embark on a perilous journey across centuries and continents, piecing together clues left behind by the traveler who will do anything to keep the object out of the Ironwoods’ grasp. In the latest book of the series, we meet back up with Rylee and Colton as they continue to go through the bumps of falling in love and are quickly seeing that if they want to see the finish line then they have to work hard together. maddox brothers series

#4 – Beautiful Burn by Jamie McGuire

Out: 1/31

Goodreads page:

In the final book of the series, we will follow the final brother, Tyler as he goes through the struggles of finding and falling in love. Like his other brothers he will be the manly-man kind of guy. With this being the final book of the series, Jamie McGuire will likely bring all the brothers back and allow us to say good-bye to them as this may be the last time that we get to see them.

#3 – Appealed by Emma Chase

Out: 1/19

Goodreads page:

In the third book of the series, we follow yet another person in Drew’s life as he tries to work his charm on finding a leading lady in his life, but like the other guys, finds that there is more to finding love then a charming smile. Chase writes great stories that are entertaining and don’t have that way of having you want to cry your eyes out at night. This is a very good thing. Sometimes you just want a book that makes you smile.

Entertainment Weekly releases cover of “Passenger” by Alexandra Bracken

The cover for the first book, Passenger, in the new series by NY Times Best Selling Author Alexandra Bracken was released by Entertainment Weekly.

In Passenger (thanks to Goodreads for the blurb):

Violin prodigy Etta Spencer had big plans for her future, but a tragedy has put her once-bright career at risk. Closely tied to her musical skill, however, is a mysterious power she doesn’t even know she has. When her two talents collide during a stressful performance, Etta is drawn back hundreds of years through time.

Etta wakes, confused and terrified, in 1776, in the midst a fierce sea battle. Nicholas Carter, the handsome young prize master of a privateering ship, has been hired to retrieve Etta and deliver her unharmed to the Ironwoods, a powerful family in the Colonies–the very same one that orchestrated her jump back, and one Nicholas himself has ties to. But discovering she can time travel is nothing compared to the shock of discovering the true reason the Ironwoods have ensnared her in their web.

Another traveler has stolen an object of untold value from them, and, if Etta can find it, they will return her to her own time. Out of options, Etta and Nicholas embark on a perilous journey across centuries and continents, piecing together clues left behind by the mysterious traveler. But as they draw closer to each other and the end of their search, the true nature of the object, and the dangerous game the Ironwoods are playing, comes to light–threatening to separate her not only from Nicholas, but her path home… forever.

The book is going to deal with some time traveling which is something that hasn’t really been done before in a Young Adult novel. There is still no set series title yet, but we do know there will be at least two books. Bracken has stated that the 2nd book is going to be called Wayfarer.

But that’s not all. Bracken also gifted her fans with the first chapter of the hotly anticipated book. You can read it by going here.

This is the first book that Bracken has written since the final book in The Darkest Minds trilogy, In the Afterlight, came out in 2014.

Passenger is set to come out January 5th, 2016 and is not yet available for preorder.

Top 10 books coming out in 2015

#10. Mended by Sydney Landon

This is the final book in a trilogy that you should be reading, especially if you are a fan of the Crossfire series. We will get to see if Lucia and Lia are able to overcome the demons and the ghosts from their past and be able to find happiness in each other. Thankfully the fans won’t have to wait to long to get to the end of the story and you know it’s goign to be a bumpy ride there.

the infinate sea cover

#9. Fifth Wave book 3 by Rick Yancey
Out: Aug. 2015

It is the conclusion to a trilogy that is slowly but surely grabbing a lot of fan’s attention. The fact that it’s going to be made into a movie is only going to get more people’s attention. We will get to see what happens with the invasion and whether or not Cassie is able to make it out alive.

#8. Thoughtless #4 by S.C. Stephens
Out: Nov. 2015

This was a pleasant surprise for the Thoughtless fans. Not only do we get another book in the series, but we get to read about Griffin and presumably Anna. There isn’t much details about this book but whatever it is about, it’s going to be the book to get.

fall with me

#7. Fall with Me by J. Lynn
Out: 3/31

We first meet Roxy and Reese in the last book and it was hard to not notice the connection that they had even through someone else’s eyes. This book looks like it will have the thrilling aspect that the last book had and that is only going to be more enticing as we read about Roxy and Reese.

the young elites

#6. The Rose Society by Marie Lu
Out: 10/6

This new series by Marie Lu is quickly shaping up to be the series that you should be reading. The first one was a riveting tale and left us wanting more. The story should expand in the second book in the series as more secrets and twists are revealed. Lu has proven that she is able to grab you and not let go until the final chapter of the story.

#5. Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare
Out: Sept. 2015

Ever since Clare announced that she is going to be writing a sequel trilogy for after The Mortal Instruments, fans have been anxiously awaiting the release of the first book. Unfortunately it’s not until towards the end of the year, but that gives you plenty of time to re-read the series if you want to.

#4. Thoughtful by S.C. Stephens
Out: 2/24

This was a pleasant surprise that Stephens have offered hew fans of the series. Kellan is one of the most popular book ‘boyfriends’ and to get to read his side of how he fell in love with Kiera is perfect. We get to understand his side of the story and get to fall in love with him all over again. Not a bad way to spend your weekend.

never never

#3. Never, Never by Colleen Hoover
Out: 1/11

Colleen Hoover is very clever and creative at creating different kinds of characters that we haven’t read about before. She is able to incorporate music into almost all her stories and make it like a 3rd main character in it. This story will probably fall along the same lines as the last few of her stories. It looks like it’s going to be filled with angst and longing and a twist that we will be trying to figure out through the whole story.

the darkest minds

#2. Passenger by Alexandra Bracken
Out: Fall 2015

This story is perhaps the most intriguing story that is going to come out next year. Bracken is beginning a new series after The Darkest Minds trilogy ended last year and it’s going to deal with time traveling. This is not something that is done often and it’s going to be interesting to see how she is able to get it straight without confusing the reader. Either way, it’s going to be one of the top books that you will need to look out for this year because it’s going to be wild ride with twists and turns that you won’t want to miss out on.

crossfire series

#1. One With You by Sylvia Day
Out: 2015

This is meant to be the final book in the Crossfire series and it should be a doozy. Gideon and Eva have been challenged in ways that they haven’t been before and their relationship is constantly put to the test. Will they ever get to a place that they can have their happy ever after or are their broken selves too much to overcome?

Top 10 books from 2014

books 2014

As the year comes to a close, we take a look back at the year of 2014 and think about all the things that stick out. There were a long list of books that  came out made a difference in our year, whether it be that Young Adutl novel that you stayed up until the wee hours of the morning reading, or that Romance novel that you were glad you had on sunglasses to hide your blush while you read at the beach, or the suspence/thriller that you snuck a read any chance you got. There was a book that came out this year that you will be reading again and again.

We got a start of a few new series this year, including Marie Lu (author of the Legend trilogy) but it was the end of a few series that made the year. We saw the final book in The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare, City of Heavenly Fire, and the final book in the Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi, Ignite Me, come out. Each book ended with a bang and allowed us to close that chapter on that part (at least until the movie adaptation comes out).

Below is the list of the top books that came out this year.

#10.  Sinner by Maggie Stiefvater
Out: 7/1

When Stiefvater announced that she was adding to her Mercy Falls series, fans went crazy. Not only did we get another book, but it would be told in Cole St. Claire’s and Isabelle’s point of view. We get to see what happens to this couple after the events in the last book and we can see if  Cole has what it takes to be the man that Isabelle needs. It’s a hard ride for Cole but seeing his transform from a reckless boy into a man is beautiful and certainly a perfect read to the fans of the series.

the young elites

#9. The Young Elites by Marie Lu
Out: 10/7

In the first book of this new series by Marie Lu (author of the Legend series) she mixes a story about Assassin’s Creed and X-men. There is a whole lot going on but once you get to the end you will find yourself feeling emotionally towards the book for it’s twist ending. These are the types of books that should be read. The ones that spark emotion, whether good or bad and this one does just that.

stay with me

#8. Stay with Me by J. Lynn

Out: 9/23

In the third book of the series, we follow Calla as she embarks on a relationship with Jax while trying to find her mother after she basically ruined her credit and stole money from her. Calla doesn’t believe that she doesn’t deserve love and that she won’t get it because of her scars and Jax makes it his life’s mission to prove her wrong. The story is perhaps the best one in the series as it has a thrilling aspect that we didn’t read in the first two books. We get to see more of the romance side as Calla tries to come to terms with the scars both physically and emotionally.

ignite me

#7. Ignite Me by Tahereh Mafi
Out: 2/4

In the final book of the trilogy, Juliette and Warner are trying to find his father so that they can take him down before he hurts more people. This book, like the other two books in the series, had a lot of twists and turns that keep you guessing. Juliette finally makes her decision about what she wants for her life personally and it’s not going to be who you think it is. It is a refreshing series and one that you should be reading if you are not.

maybe someday
#6 Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover
Out: 3/18

In the first book of this new series by Colleen Hoover, we follow Sydney, a girl who just caught her boyfriend cheating on her with best friend, as she falls in love with the boy next door, Ridge. He is the perfect guy for her, but there is a problem, he has a girlfriend. The story focuses more on the angst of longing that one can have when they find the person that they are meant for with someone else. You can feel the struggle that Sydney and Ridge have because they are good people but are stuck in a bad situation.

#5. Rebel by Amy Tintera
Out: 5/13

In the final book of this duology, Wren and Callum work on breaking out the other Reboots that are trapped in HARC. As the war brews, Wren and Callum get closer but Wren starts to see that her feelings for Callum make her stronger not weaker. This is quick read that has a lot of action and fighting going on. Wren is not one to take crap from anyone and she is the perfect one to lead the charge for the war. This is the perfect series to read when you are missing out on Hunger Games or Divergent.

fighting to forget

#4. Fighting to Forget by J.B. Salsbury
Out: 4/15

In the third book in the series, we follow Rex and Mac as they embark on their relationship but its not that easy road that we’ve read in the first two books. Rex has had a rough upbringing and has a hard time accepting love of any kind but he can’t stop this connection that he feels to Mac. Mac is keeping a big secret from Rex and when it comes out Rex is challenged in a way he hasn’t been before. This story tackles big issues that haven’t been done before and Salsbury knocks it out of the park.

Into-the-Afterlight cover

#3. In the Afterlight by Alexandra Bracken
Out: 10/28

In this final book in The Darkest Minds trilogy, Ruby works with Cole as they try and overtake the government and their rules while figuring out her relationship with Liam. This story works that love story into a story of war and loss and gives us something to root for in the story. Ruby learns how to be a leader and how sometimes the right decisions are the hardest to make. This ending is beautiful tragic and really gives the fans that satisfying ending that they deserve.

breaking the rules

#2. Breaking the Rules by Katie McGarry
Out: 12/8

This book takes place between the first and second books in the series. We follow the couple from the first book, Noah and Echo, as they embark on a journey from teenager to adulthood. For them, it seems like it will be a breeze considering everything that they’ve been through. But nothing is as easy as it seems. Echo and Noah learn that there is so much that they need to learn, not just about their relationship, but life as well. They really come in to their own and come into their own as adults.

city of heavenly fire

#1. City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare
Out: 5/27

This is easily one of the most anticipated books of the 2014 and Clare was able to live up to the hype. This is the final book in the Mortal Instruments series as the group finally comes to terms with the war that has been brewing since the start of the series as they take down Clary’s brother, Sebastian. Clare is able to give her fans a satisfying ending and still offer that big twist for the series. This is the book that once you started you couldn’t put down and you would be hard-pressed to find a book that is able to grab you and hold on to you like this book did.

What is your favorite book of 2014?

Book review: “In the Afterlight” by Alexandra Bracken – stellar finale to your new addictive series

Into-the-Afterlight cover

Format: ebook, paperback, hard cover
Series: book 3 of 3 of The Darkest Minds trilogy
Rating: 16+ for language, sensual content, dark themes
Genre: Young Adult
Goodreads page:

In the final book in the series, Cole and Ruby must band together all the Greens, Blues, Yellows, and Reds that they can find as they try and take down the League before they can take out all the special kids.

Boy does Bracken know how to build up this story. In most stories, the build up can get a bit long and boring, but Bracken doesn’t do that in this story. She is able to find the conflict that Ruby has to go through on a regular basis and able to show that on the pages.

Ruby and Liam’s relationship is once again challenged over and over again in this story. They have been through so much in the three books and the problems that they had before the book started come to a head in this story as they see if whether or not they have what it takes to make it.

in the afterlight quote

The beautiful way that Bracken writes their relationship is certainly a highlight in the story. We see these two characters become the people that they are meant to be. It’s through her relationship with Liam that Ruby learns that sometimes forgiving yourself is harder then waiting for that person to forgive you. And through Ruby, Liam learns to find strength in himself and never to be ashamed of who he is.

Liam and Cole’s relationship certainly comes to a head in this story has Cole takes authority over the group and Liam has a hard time accepting it. They have a long and rough history and all of their ghosts and demons come out as they try and bond together so that they don’t fall apart.

What I love the most about Bracken’s writing is the quotes that just stick out and can relate to you even though what you have going on in your life has nothing to do with what is going on in the story. It’s a beautiful form of writing that is ageless and can relate to any generation at any time.

This series is one of that is flying under the radar and should be on your radar. It has a strong message of being who you are never ever let what other people change you.
