‘Star Wars’ falls from the top of the box office

ride along 2

It only took four weeks before the latest Star Wars movie to fall from the top spot. The sequel to the surprise hit is the movie that is able to take it down, along with a Golden Globe winning movie. Both of these movies were able to take down the movie and force Star Wars into the number three spot at the box office.

Ride Along 2 is the top movie this weekend with its estimated $34 million. The first movie was a surprise hit at the box office so it was no surprise that a sequel would be made. The movie didn’t make as big of an opening as the first movie did, which took in $41 million, but it still was able to beat out Star Wars and a Golden Globe winning movie.

the reverent

The Reverent also is able to beat out Star Wars with its estimated $29.5 million weekend. The movie is enjoying an increase at the box office since it did so well at the Golden Globes which was last weekend. The movie should continue to do well tonight at The Critic’s Choice Awards and the Oscars which are next month.

Star Wars The Force Awakens falls from the top spot and brings in an estimated $25.1 million. The movie puts the box office total to $851 million and that is just domestically. The movie continues to hit double digits and is likely to hit $1 billion domestically by the end of its run and an overall $2 billion.

Rounding out the top five is the premiere of the true story titled 13 Hours: The Secret Soldier of Benghazi with an estimated $16 million. Daddy’s Home falls just short of double digits with an estimated $9.3 million.

‘Star Wars’ set to become highest grossing film domestically

star wars

It has finally happened. The latest Star Wars movie has now topped the box office for the highest grossing film in America (not including inflation). The movie surpassed the total on Tuesday when it took in around $8 million on Tuesday. After the totals come in on Wednesday, Star Wars should overtake Avatar’s $760.5 million that it took in domestically.

The movie still has a long way to go to become the highest grossing film of all time. Avatar’s international box office is far ahead of Star Wars and they have a big uphill climb to reach that level. Avatar made over $2 billion worldwide giving the total box office of $2.7 billion. Star Wars currently has $799 internationally giving it a total box office of $1.5 billion. It’s going to take a continued effort by the fans to have the movie continue to do well, but it’s unlikely that it will top the box office.

J.J. Abrams and James Cameron are no strangers to big box office films, both having done so before. Cameron’s Titanic currently holds the number two spot (with inflation added) at the box office at $2.1 billion. This makes Cameron essentially the king of the box office because both of his movies sit at the top two spots of the box office. J.J. Abrams’s big break came when he did the competition, Star Trek movies, which took in $527.6 million between the two movies.

While Star Wars is unlikely to top Avatar for the top grossing movie of all time, it should continue to do well and perhaps pass Jurassic World on the list. World currently sits at $1.6 billion worldwide. The high rating movie is looking to set the standard for the next two episodes and other spin-off movies that have been planned by Disney and Lucasfilms.

Record breaking weekend for ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’

star-wars-the-force-awakens-lightsaber

It was a history in the making this weekend as the seventh episode for Star Wars, Force Awakens, came out this week. This was the most anticipated movie ever since that it was announced that there would be a new episode. Fans came out in droves to see it not only once, but multiple times this weekend. It shows as the movie not only shatters records but the sets the bar so high that it may not be reached again.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens brings in a whopping $238 million in the first weekend. This beats out the other big movie to come out this year, Jurassic World’s, opening weekend by about $30 million. This is not the first record that the movie broke this week. Thursday, it broke the advance screening sales and also the highest single-day box office. And it’s only getting started. The movie goes on to break more records besides opening box office. The movie is the fastest to $100 million, $150 million, and $200 million. The record was previously held by Jurassic World for all three categories. At this pace, it should become the highest box office in movie history because you know that fans are not going to stop seeing it over and over again. Especially with it’s almost perfect rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite the biggest movie of the decade coming out this weekend, the other two new movies did well with both of them reaching double digits at the box office. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip did well despite its lack of enthusiasm from the fans bringing in an estimated $14.4 million. The comedy from SNL alums Tina Fey and Amy Poehler did well in Sisters bringing an estimated $13.4 million in the opening weekend.

Rounding out the top five is Mockingjay part 2 with an estimated $5.6 million. It looks like it’s going to fall short of the $300 million mark making it the lowest box office total for the series. Creed enjoys its Golden Globes nomination as it brings in an estimated $5 million over the weekend. It should cross the $100 million mark by the end of its run. For the rest of the box office, you can go here.

There is a laundry list of movies set to come out on Christmas this week, but Hateful Eight and Joy are the ones that might draw the biggest crowds. Star Wars is most likely going to be the top of the box office for a little while now, probably not leaving until Deadpool comes out in February.

‘Creed’ and ‘The Good Dinosaur’ fall during Thanksgiving weekend at the box office

mockingjay pt 2_2

‘Creed’ and ‘The Good Dinosaur’ fall during Thanksgiving weekend at the box officeThere were two big name movies that were set to come out this week and both movies had a chance to grab the top spot. Mockingjay part 2 is not getting the box office that was predicted leaving the title for top movie wide open this Thanksgiving weekend. Both new movies gave it a strong push, but were not able to grab the top spot.

Mockingjay part 2 repeats at the top of the box office with $51.6 million at the box office. The movie is creeping towards the $200 million mark but it’s unlikely to reach the $300 million mark especially with the lineup of movies coming out in December. Unlike the other series, this would have Mockingjay part 2 have the lowest box office in the series which is usually the movie that has the highest.

The two new movies to come out where the new Disney movie, The Good Dinosaur, which premiered with $39.1 million, just beating out the other new movie. The latest Rocky movie, Creed, impressed with its $30.1 million opening and strong reviews. The Good Dinosaur holds a 76% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and Creed holds an astounding 92%, both better than at 71%.

Rounding out the top five is going to be Spectre with $12.8 million and The Peanuts Movie with $9.7 million. Both movies are over the $100 million mark but are likely to remain around the spots that they are now. For the rest of the box office you can go here.

This week we start the movies coming out in December and it’s going to be a doozy of a month. Not only is the new Star Wars movie set to come out, but also a whole slew of Oscar contenders. This week we get two movies that are a little unexpected. The horror Christmas film, Krampus, won’t likely do well, and neither will the latest adaptation of Macbeth. Mockingjay part 2 is likely to 3-peat unless The Good Dinosaur and Creed make a strong surge this week.

‘Mockingjay pt 2’ creeps over $100 million to dominate box office

mockingjay pt 2

There were three movies that were set to come out this weekend, but it was really one movie that was on everybody’s minds. The final Hunger Games movie, Mockingjay part 2, had a lot of expectations this weekend, but was unable to reach that high standard that was set by the previous three movies. But that doesn’t mean that it won’t by the end of its run.

Mockingjay part 2 premiered over the $100 million mark, which is only the 5th movie to do that this year, with an estimated $101 million. The $101 million opening is the lowest of the series, even though it had the highest expectations. It also holds the lowest approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes for the series at 71% and it makes you start to wonder if the movie is not going to live up to the expectations.

The other two new movies to come out this week are the new Christmas movie with Seth Rogen called The Night Before called $10.1 million and The Secret in their Eyes with an estimated $6.6 million. These two movies did what they could to give Mockingjay part 2 a run for it’s money, but were unable to do so.

night before

Spectre falls from the top spot, but brings in an estimated $14.6 million. With everyone flooding to the movies to see Mockingjay, there is a dramatic drop for the third week. While James Bond is a household name, the movie is having a hard time making money. It’s not likely that it will reach its $245 million budget. The Peanuts Movie brought in an estimated $12.8 million over the weekend and should cross over the $100 million mark this week. For the rest of the box office, you can go here.

Mockingjay part 2 has some competition this week as Disney’s latest movie The Good Dinosaur is set to come out on Thanksgiving. Even if Mockingjay does win this week, it will be short lived as the new Star Wars movie is set to come out at the beginning of December.

‘Spectre’ beats out new comers at the box office

spectre

There were two new movies coming out this weekend that tried to challenge Spectre and The Peanuts Movie for the top of the box office. Neither movie was able to do that or get into double digits at the box office.

Spectre once again repeats at the top of the box office bringing in an estimated $35 million over the weekend. While the movie has high hopes for having a big box office total, the 50% decrease from week to week is not going to help matters. Especially since the competition that it’s going to have in the coming weeks.

The Peanuts Movie is once again in the shadows of Spectre bringing in an estimated $24.2 million over the weekend. The movie is now right on the cusp of the $100 million mark and should pass over it by the end of the week, also beating out the $99 million budget.

love the coopers

The two new movies coming out were Love the Coopers with an estimated $8.4 million. The Christmas movie was hoping to bring in money for the holiday but doesn’t look like it will. The other new movie to come out is The 33 with an estimated $5.8 million. The Martian remain in the top five with an estimated $6.7 million. For the rest of the box office, you can go here.

The final movie of The Hunger Games saga, Mockingjay pt 2, is set to come out this week and will likely dominate the box office until the next Star Wars movie comes out in December. It is predicted to premiere over $100 million at the box office with many of the fans going multiple times to see the movie.

‘The Peanuts’ and ‘Spectre’ battle it out for the top spot at the box office

spectree

There were two movies that were set to come out this weekend that was going to draw in a crowd. They both succeeded in doing that and had great opening weekends. It was a battle for the top of the box office for the franchise names, but it was the new James Bond movie that was able to grab the crown for the box office.

The latest James Bond movie (and final one with Daniel Craig), Spectre, opened to the second biggest of his time as James Bond. The movie premiered with an estimated $73 million. The movie fell short of matching 2013’s Skyfall’s opening which premiered with $88.3 million. The movie is getting high praise from the reviewers and the fans which means it should continue to do well at the box office, even though there is a lot of competition coming out in the next few weeks.

The other new movie to premiere is The Peanuts Movie which brought in an estimated $45 million. The movie has high hopes as it is a movie that the whole family can enjoy and with that big of an opening, it is likely to reach that $100 million mark but may not do much better as Disney is releasing a new movie Thanksgiving weekend.

PEANUTS

The Martian drops from the top spot with an estimated $9.3 million. It should cross the $200 million mark by the end of next week making it the 7th movie to cross over that mark this year. Goosebumps remain in the top five with an estimated $6.9 million and Bridge of Spies with an estimated $6 million. For the rest of the box office, you can go here.

It’s a slow week for releases as there are only three movies set to come out. The Brad Pitt and Angelina drama, By the Sea, should draw some attention; the true story of thirty-three men that survived a tragedy in The 33; and the latest Christmas movie to be made to get us in the holiday mood in Love the Coopers. Spectre and The Peanuts Movie will likely still be at the top of the box office next week, but likely will drop down as Mockingjay pt 2 is set to come out next week.
