‘Shadowhunters’ 2×3 – Jace fights through the city to try and save Alec

shadowhunters-2_3_1

Shadowhunters comes back with a vengeance as a war is brewing between Valentine and his new army and the Shadowhunters. But it doesn’t stop there as there is a war brewing between Clary and essentially everyone else in her life. Alec wants to find Jace and bring him back while her mom wants to kill him. That’s right, kill her own son.

In the last episode, Clary trying to find Jace before the Clave kill him and Simon gets a task at spying on the werewolves for the new Clave boss, Victor. In this episode, titled ‘Parabatai Lost’, Alec suffers from the effects of trying to find Jace while Jace tries to survive living with the werewolves and staying away from the Clave.

The last show had quite the epic finale as Jace and Clary escape Valentine’s ship only to find themselves a beach apart. Jace finds himself in deep water (pun intended) when he is found next to a dead body. He goes on the run only to find out that the woman he found is a dead werewolf, who they think he killed.

Isabelle is desperate to try and help Alec and she uses Magnus as her backup. Nothing he does seems to work because they know that the only way that he can wake up is with Jace’s help. Problem is that Jace is wanted by basically the whole city of New York. The only way that she has a chance to help is to make a deal with the last person she wants to, Victor.

shadowhunters-2_3_2

Things don’t look up for Simon as he learns that his mom is missing. Only gets worse when Raphael threatens Simon to find Camille or he will hurt his mom. Even though he wanted to help Clary I don’t think that he thought that all this was going to happen. Him becoming a vampire and having his family threatened by other vampires.

Jace fights his way through the city, literally, as he fights off the werewolf pack to try and get to Alec. At the end, there is a very sad and powerful scene where Jace helps Alec and we see the connection between the two of them and how it’s deeper then brotherhood and parabatai.

In the next episode, The Clave begin their trial with Jace while the others try and find a way to help him.

‘Shadowhunters’ 2×2 – Valentine continues to grow his army while the Clave continue to search for Jace

shadowhunters-2_2_1

Shadowhunters comes back with a vengeance as a war is brewing between Valentine and his new army and the Shadowhunters. But it doenst stop there as there is a war brewing between Clary and essentially everyone else in her life. Alec wants to find Jace and bring him back while her mom wants to kill him. That’s right, kill her own son.

In the last episode, the season opens up with a bang as Jace is reluctant to help Valentine help build his army which makes Valentine push him harder than before. The rest of the gang is off trying to find Jace before he does something that is going to be unforgiveable. Throughout the show, we see that not everyone is as they seem as Jocelyn tries to kill Jace. In this episode, titled ‘The Door in the Dark’, has Clary trying to find Jace before the Clave kill him and Simon gets a task at spying on the werewolves for the new Clave boss, Victor.

While everyone may be out to blame Clary, because that is the easy thing to do, there are some people that know that it’s not her fault. Izzy and her grow closer as Alec continues to blame her for all the problems they have. This forces Clary to make a drastic decision to try and find Jace without any help from anyone else. It will come back to haunt the Clave to keep her out because Valentine is also interested in having her on his side.

shadowhunters-2_2_2

Dot kidnaps Clary for Valentine and him and her try to convince Clary that she needs to join their side. This only complicates Jace’s life because he wants to protect Clary and the only way he can do that is going deeper into the world of Valentine. Clary uses her time there to try and get Dot to help her again (because she is only there by force). Jace gets newfound strength with Clary because while he’s not supposed to love her (like that) he does and he uses her strength to help them escape.

Luke is able to figure out a way to try and find out where Valentine is, but it comes with major consequences to Alec. Of course he’s full speed ahead but Izzy is reluctant to let Alec go ahead of it. When they do the ritual, Alec goes to deep and becomes sleeping beauty.

Simon is basically running in circles as he can’t figure out a way to stay out on top of the world around him. Victor backs him in a corner as he blackmails him into ratting out information on the werewolves and Raphael returns and makes Simon find Camille or else the vampires will kill him. It has him asking Magnus Bane for help.

In the next episode, Alec suffers from the effects of trying to find Jace while Jace tries to survive living with the werewolves and staying away from the Clave.

Review: ‘Lady Midnight’ by Cassandra Clare – Emma and Julian have to fight against a new threat

lady midnight

Format: e-book, paperback, hard cover
Format read: e-book
Series: book 1 of The Dark Artifices series
Rating: 14+ sensual content, graphic scenes
Genre: Young Adult
Goodreads page: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25494343-lady-midnight?from_search=true

Before we get started with this, just want to give fair warning. There are minor spoilers for the series but if you have read all the books, then it won’t be. The things I hint at are fairly obvious (especially if you read The Shadowhunter Academy and City of Heavenly Fire). With that said, let’s dive in.
*
*
*
The world of Shadowhunters is not yet over and it doesn’t look like it’s going to be over for a long time. In the first book of the spin-off series, The Dark Artifices, we follow the story of two characters that we met at the end of the sixth Mortal Instruments book, Julian and Emma. At the time they were 12 years old, but you could already see a budding story forming between the two of them.

Flash foward seven years. The pair are now 19 years old and in charge of running the Institute. Julian has more responsibility then a young man should have had and the pressure weighs heavily on him. He counts on Emma, his parabatai, to help alleviate some of the pressure, but as a new threat introduces itself, he finds that being around Emma only makes it worse.

The Shadowhunters growing up basically reciting, The Law is tough, but it is the Law. The hardest rule that he has had to follow is not falling in love with his parabatai. Being a Shadowhunter fan, I knew this rule since the beginning of the series but I could never fully understand why. Why does it matter if you romantically love them? Wouldn’t that make you better, stronger? This book finally dives into the problems that stem from falling in love with your parabatai as it looks like it’s the center of the new threat.

Julian Blackthorn is quickly becoming one of my favorite characters in the series. I relate to him on a lot of levels (in regards to having to grow up before being ready and being the one that has to be strong for everyone, despite). Julian is a romantic at heart but struggles with his feelings for Emma while trying to do right by his family. Emma causes him to be reckless and I love to see those moments that he throws caution to the wind and acts like a teenager. Young love gives hope and them together brings a lot of hope (along with heartbreak) with it.

Of course it wouldn’t be an epic story without an epic love story. And this one between Emma and Julian? Yeah WAY more epic than Jace and Clary. Don’t get me wrong, they had a lot of obstacles and what not, but this whole thing with Emma and Julian, there are literally no words to describe how beautiful their love is. It’s what young love is supposed to give you, hope that the world is not as messed up as you know it to be. And that scene on the beach? The best scene between the two of them. When you read it, you will know why.

Now it wouldn’t be a Shadowhunter series without something catastrophic about to happen. In this book, it involves a string of murders that are linked to Emma’s parents’ death. Of course, she is going to want to find out the truth and she quickly sees that it’s bigger than she imagined it. The plot is going to twist, people are going to get betrayed, lines will be crossed. The question will remain who will be there at the end and what side they are going to be on.

The ending? Oh my God. There are no words to describe the ending. And I’m not even talking about the climax. Oh no. I am talking about those three chapters after the ending. The part where all my hopes and dreams go right down the tubes and in a way that I just can’t swallow. I know that it’s going to be tough to come back from the ending and I just hope that when the whole series is done, that it turns out the way that I want it to.

I love how in depth that this whole Shadowhunter story has become. There has been a lot of successful series that have come from the original Mortal Instruments. I thought when we got to City of Heavenly Fire we finally got to a place where we could be like ‘ok I’m good now’. But no, this book begins a whole new can of worms and I can’t wait to see where Clare takes us.

Clare’s world is often compared to the kind of world that JK Rowling created with Harry Potter. Unlike that world, she didn’t get the same kind of success with the movies, but she is finding success with the show Shadowhunters on ABC Freeform. For me, the stories are different but they are the same. They both involve so many different levels and while it is a story of fantasy and fiction, it is plausible enough to be true. For me, this is the perfect find of fantasy I like to read because when I want to escape, I want to escape into a world that CAN happen, not into a world that is nonexistent.

Book of the Week – ‘Lady Midnight’ by Cassandra Clare

lady midnight

In the first book of a new spin-off from The Mortal Instruments, we move 5 years from where that series ended. This time we jump into the Blackthorn family and Julian and Emma. They have agreed to be parabatai even though Julian has had a crush on Emma their whole lives. They now go through training to be a Shadowhunter. When Julian’s brother, Mark, comes back from the faeries he has no memory of them and they have to decide if whether or not they can trust him.

This is one of the most anticipated books of the year (at least for me) ever since Clare announced that she was doing another spin-off series. I have gone back and forth with wanting to wait until the whole series is out before reading, but I don’t know if I have the willpower. The series are so in depth and the world is so consuming, that it’s hard to wait. This series is quickly becoming a world like Harry Potter where you want to jump into it and live there forever.

Top 5 books coming out in May

sinful love

#5 – Sinful Love by Lauren Blakely

Out: 3/29

In the next book of the series, we follow Michael Sloane as he has to open up to the idea of not only admitting he has emotions, but also to the idea of love. He is faced with ghosts from his past that he must confront whether or not he wants to.

The series is a quick but fun read. It has a different couple in each book so you don’t have to worry about waiting for all the books to come out before reading the series (because that’s how I work with some series). While some of the story can be considered ‘cookie-cutter’ I enjoy seeing where the story and Blakely is able to create characters that you just can’t help but root for.

where lightning strikes

#4 – Where Lightning Strikes by AL Jackson

Out: 3/22

In the next book of the series, we follow Tamar King who thought that she was safe inside her own world, until she met Lyrik and he turned her whole world upside down. He forces her to come back to reality and makes her see that sometimes real life can be better than the one you dream up in your head.

The Bleeding Stars series is a series that you can’t help but fall in love with right from the beginning. It does follow a new couple with each book so it helps with following the series. The first two books (and will likely happen in this book) has a lot of passion and romance that mike make you blush if you are in public so be aware.

the great hunt

#3 – The Great Hunt by Wendy Higgins

Out: 3/8

In the first book of a new series, we get adventure, love, and twists and turns around every corner. The story is certainly going to grab you right from the beginning and not let you go until the final book comes out.

I started reading Higgins after a friend recommended reading her last series. I was hesitant at first because I wasn’t sure I would like the paranormal, but I was hooked after one chapter. I became invested with the series and Higgins quickly became that one-click buy author for me. This book is going to be exciting and we know that she can successful write a paranormal series that everyone can love.

walk the edge

#2 – Walk the Edge by Katie McGarry

Out: 3/29

In the next book of the series, we follow Razor as he struggles with his commitment to the Reign of Terror motorcycle club and his commitment to his friends. He knows that Breanna is not good enough for him but when she needs him, he will stop at nothing to make sure that she is safe.

McGarry’s stories are ones that hold you and never let you go. You know that some stuff is going to happen because that is life, but you know that in the end everything will be ok (even if you don’t like it). What I love the most about her books, is that they are the types of books that you will be reading at night and say ‘ok one more chapter’ ten times in a row. They are the ones that sneak up on you and you can’t help but want to read it all in one day.
