Review: ‘Friday’ by EL Todd – Axel tries to live a life without Marie

In the next book of the series, Axel tries to live his life without Marie but he quickly sees that while it might he thinks is best for her, it might be the worst thing for both of them.

Much like the first couple, Axel and Marie suffer a break up because of the man’s insecurities and then that aha moment goes off and he tries to win her back. Unlike the first couple though, it only happens once. And unlike the first couple, while it may be frustrating to see Axel keep denying his love for Marie, I can understand it. They quickly became my favorite couple of the series because with them, I wasn’t just rereading the same things over and over again.

Axel got a lot of baggage that he is carrying and I love that Marie is the one that makes him face what happened in his past. It’s obvious that what happened with his Dad is going to cause problems with Marie. You would have to be blind to not see that. What I like the most, and something that EL Todd does an amazing job in, is how his father’s decisions molded the people that Axel and Frankie became.

Marie has her own things that she needs to work through. I like that she doesn’t just give into Axel and his problems that she makes him face what his problems are and that he is not the man that he is better than the man that he thinks that he is. My favorite scenes with her though are the ones where she protects Frankie’s honor and snaps at Hawke for what he’s doing to her. As we know, he doesn’t exactly leave her life but Marie hates that he thinks that he can just essentially stalk her but not be with her and make her happy. It’s a fair point and I know that we all wish we could have a friend that would defend our backs like her.

While I did like Marie and Axel as a couple better, I felt it was a little repetitive to how the first couple went. I would have liked to have seen more of a difference between the two sets because it felt like it was just too much the same. I hope that with the next couple there is more differences.

Review: ‘Thursday’ by EL Todd – go back to see how Axel and Marie got together

Format: e-book, paperback
Format read: e-book arc from the author
Series: book 4 of the Timeless series
Rating: 18+ sexual content, language
Genre: Contemporary Romance

It doesn’t happen very often where I like the ‘secondary couple’ of a series but in this case, Axel and Marie are quickly and permanently becoming my favorite couple of the series. This story only solidified that fact because Axel becomes the man who can open to the possibility of love and Marie gets her dream come true.

After a one night stand of passion, the pair come together to help their friend (Frankie) survive her break up with Hawke. Initially I will admit that I was very annoyed with how she handled everything but seeing her through Axel’s eyes I began to understand her more. She is acting the way her father did when her mother died. The psychology major in me is cheering out loud because Todd perfects the art of how kids pick up traits from their parents. More often then not in books, that doesn’t happen. A father will be a jerk (for lack of another word I can’t use) and we don’t see any of that residual on the character. I like how Todd uses the experiences of the characters past to dictate their decisions. BECAUSE THAT IS REAL.

Now on to what I like to call the money shot of the book. The love scenes. You thought it was hot with Hawke and Frankie. That was lukewarm compared to Axel and Marie. They have so much lust for one another you don’t want to believe it because it can’t be real. Oh but it is people. It is!

Axel by far is my favorite character in the book (though that might change after I read Kyle’s book). He is what I expect to be that average joe kind of guy. He likes sports, makes inappropriate jokes, and thinks with one head (if you catch my drift). Marie forces him to see his flaws and on his own he decides to change for her. If that’s not love, then I don’t know what is.

For the ending, if you read the first book you probably expected it to happen. And the fact that you know that they end up together in the end doesn’t make it that surprising. They needed some kind of bang in their relationship. What I am looking forward to is how Axel gets his head out of his butt and tries to woo Marie over again. And the question will be, how long will it take? Will it be like Tuesday where Hawke and Frankie don’t get together for 80% of the book? While its realistic I hope not. Axel and Marie are my favorite and I need them together for every single page.

**Spoilers will be talked about in the review. Please be warned**

I don’t really know where to begin with this story. There is so much to talk about and I don’t want to miss a thing. The relationship has yet another hurdle that they have to go through as tragedy strikes in Hawke’s home. Of course you can predict what happened, because you know what’s going to happen from the first book, and you know that it’s going to send Hawke into a downward spiral. What you don’t see coming is the after effects on his relationship with Frankie.

History seems to repeat itself. This part of the story I didn’t like. I also didn’t like the fact that Frankie went back to Kyle. I felt so bad for him because you know that it’s doomed to fail. Well, at least I did because I caved and read the synopsis of all the books =) Also, because it’s obvious that Hawke and Frankie are going to find their way back to one another. I think that it would have been better if this was the second book for Hawke and Frankie because the fact that they break up twice for pretty much the same thing is kind of redundant.

rolling eyes photo: eye roll 2afcp36jpg.gif

Now, I really didn’t like Hawke in this story. I was with Axel in that he kept breaking Frankie’s heart whenever things got tough. I hardly ever root for the starring couple to not end up together and a part of me didn’t want them to end up together. If I was in their life, I would have been like Marie and trying to get Frankie to marry Kyle. Hawke may be her soulmate but he shouldn’t keep dropping her when things get tough.

Frankie to her credit was honest with Kyle and really did give their relationship a try, we all (including Kyle) knew that it wasn’t going to last. When there is someone in the relationship that talks about how they are soulmates with someone else? Yeah that doesn’t give much hope that things are going to last. This book did get me excited about Kyle’s books because seeing his heart broken in these last two books, I want to see him get his happy ever after. I hope that he can forgive Frankie in the process.

Review: ‘Tuesday’ by EL Todd – Hawke and Frankie try to rekindle their magic

tuesday

Format: e-book, paperback

The first book could be considered the hot to this book’s cold. Because that’s basically what it is. It’s been two years since the first book and Frankie and Hawke are trying to get over their break up. But their life is no longer going to be apart as fate brings them together again. Their best friends, Marie and Axel are getting married and now they are forced to spend time with one another.

This is not the first book where a couple breaks up and finds their way back together. But this is one of the few books that has a realistic reunion. The way that things ended with Hawke and Frankie was heartbreakingly awful and I would have been mad and a little disappointed if they got back together within the first few chapters of the book. There are two parts of how I feel when I read books like this. One part is that I want them to get together quickly but that’s just not the reality of the situation. The best love stories are ones that you can relate to and see yourself in.

This book really has three stories in one. If you read the synopsis of the other books (like I guiltily did) then you know that not only does this include the main couple Hawke and Frankie but introduces us to the other couples in the books. We get our first look at the end result of Marie and Axel and then we see the third boy that is going to be in the series.

Back to the main story, in the first book the source of the problem was Hawke’s relationship with his mom and father. It is pretty nonexistent in this book but as the story progresses, you see droplets of that turmoil coming back into Hawke’s life. He really is trying to be the main that Frankie wants/deserves but we all know that it’s going to be a cold and hard day for them when his parents’ problems come back into his life.

Blurb

I don’t believe in destiny.

In fate.

Or in soul mates.

But I believe in Hawke.

My life has never been whole since my parents left forever. I have my brother, someone I can barely tolerate most of the time, and I have my best friend, Marie.

And I have myself.

But when Hawke walks into my life, there’s an immediate connection. Our eyes lock and an unspoken conversation is exchanged. For the first time in my life, I actually feel something.

But he doesn’t.

He keeps me at arm’s length and pretends there’s nothing between us when there clearly is. I’m not the kind of girl to wait around for any guy, so I don’t.

But that doesn’t mean he isn’t in the back of my mind.

Our paths cross again in a way neither one of us expect and it changes everything. Was it destiny that made it happen? Was it fate?

Or was it something else?

Review

In the first book of the series we follow Frankie and Hawke who feel fated for one another and have to deal with a monster inside one of them.

I ran into the same problem with this book that I did for the Entourage series that she wrote. She sped through the first third of the book and then was perfect the rest. It felt like she was trying to get to the good stuff, but try not to have it just happen overnight. It is a struggle to find that balance, but fortunately for this book, I love the remaining 2/3 of the book so the feelings for the first third go out the window.

I love the development of Hawke and the reveal of all his layers. He has a temper and unlike other books whose male lead have a temper, he actually shows it. But his temper isn’t just because of genetics. It’s what happens when you are filled with so much anger and resentment. You become a live wire, ready to hurt anyone who gets to close.

Frankie is perhaps the most relatable character in the book, especially to the female audiences. Many of us have dealt with someone who has anger issues and like her, he make excuses for them because we hold on to the good times. The difference being is that Hawke is trying to be better and that is probably why it’s so hard for Frankie to walk away, even though she probably should.

I really like where this series is going to take us as we get to see if Hawke can eventually overcome his anger and be the man that Frankie needs. The best part is that EL Todd loves her fans so much that she released the whole series on the same day! That’s right you don’t have to wait months to continue the series. Just pop over to your respective website and buy the next book. It’s perfect!

Excerpt

“Have you thought any more about my offer?”

“Does it still stand?” I asked.

“Of course it does. However, I have one condition.”

I narrowed my eyes. “Which is?”

“You have to show me that beautiful ass—just a peek.”

I rolled my eyes but couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. “Nope.”

“Then you at least have to cook for me all week.”

“That I can do.”

“Without wearing any bottoms…”

I scrunched up a napkin and threw it at him. “Pervert.”

He chuckled. “I never told you I wasn’t.”

I pretended to be offended but it only made me feel warm inside.

“So, when are you being kicked out?”

“Monday.”

“That gives me plenty of time to get rid of all the filth.”

I pulled my hair out of the hair tie and let it fall to my shoulders. Hawke’s eyes immediately went to the strands and his expression changed. I fluffed the hair around my scalp with my fingers. After being pulled back all day, it felt good. “You seem like an organized person.”

“Sorry?” A blank expression was on his face.

“You said your place is covered in filth. But you seem so clean.”

“Oh…” He finally came back to the conversation. “No, I live like a pig just like every other guy.”

“I’m so excited to stay with you…”

He chuckled. “Don’t worry. I’ll give it a thorough cleaning. Just don’t tell your brother you’re staying with me.”

“Why?” That was an odd request. “He knows we hang out.”

“I don’t want to give him the wrong impression. Knowing him, he’ll jump to the worst possible conclusion. He doesn’t act like it when you’re around, but he’s fiercely protective of you. If he thought I even touched your hand, he’d come after me with a chainsaw.”

“That’s a little excessive…”

Hawke shrugged. “He’s your brother. If he’s crazy, you’re crazy.”

“That’s a slippery slope…”

His phone lit up on the table with a message. I knew I shouldn’t read it but I did. Come over tonight. It was from a girl named Brittany. I quickly looked away like I hadn’t read it.

Hawke locked the screen so it turned black. He knew I saw it.

I kept acting like I didn’t. I knew what he did in his spare time. It shouldn’t bother me but sometimes it did. It wouldn’t matter if he seemed happy, but it was clear he was miserable. It seemed like he was making himself suffer on purpose.

But why?

“I should head home,” Hawke said as he slid out of the booth.

Or you should head to Brittany’s. “Me too. I have to start packing. Ugh, I’m not looking forward to that.”

“I would offer to help, but I don’t want to.” He gave me a smile that told me he was joking.

“I’ll see you later.”

“Bye, Muffin.”

I raised an eyebrow. “What did you just call me?”

“What?” He turned back around. “You’re the muffin girl. So, I’ll call you Muffin.”

“That’s the silliest nickname I’ve ever heard.”

“And yet, it fits you perfectly.”

Review: ‘Dangerous Stranger’ by EL Todd- repetitive story that’s too farfetched to believe

image

Format: ebook, paperback

Format read: ebook

Series: book 4 of 5 of Beautiful Entourage series

Rating: 18+ for language, sexual content

Genre: New Adult

Goodreads page: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25453145-dangerous-stranger

In the fourth book of the series, we follow Jett as he becomes an escort for a man who wants to tell his family that he’s gay, which is not out of the ordinary for the escorts. But things get complicated when Jett falls for his client’s sister who believes that he is gay.

I wanted to like this book, but it was hard for me to really like. There were a lot of issues that I had with the main one being that it was just beyond believable. Jett did not at all hide his feelings for Ophelia and the explanations he gave for flirting with her were weak and made no sense, but she just believed them. Ophelia was supposed to be this ‘intelligent’ person but she just fell for everything that he said and was under the illusion that he was gay. If I were her, I wouldn’t have believed he was gay.

I had an issue with the conflict and ending of the story. **Spoiler alert (but not really because you probably already knew this would happen) After Ophelia finds out the truth, they get into a fight and she rightfully is angry with Jett for lying to her. But then the second he gets offended because she just doesn’t believe him, she lays down her feelings and apologizes to him. I’m sorry, but if someone did that to me, I would be beyond angry and not so quick to forgive.
But there are some positives to the book. I did like the relationship that Jett had with his friends. They were there to help him when he needed them the most. I like that comradery that they have and wish that I could see more of it in the series.

To me, this story is a lot harder to get through then the other books were. I could see myself reading the other three books while on a vacation or relaxing somewhere, because they are quick reads, but I don’t know if I could read this one again. I don’t like to give bad reviews of books, but this one is a hard one to stomach. It may be worth skipping in the series.

Review: ‘Dark Escort’ by EL Todd – Cato gets his happy ever after

image

Format: ebook, paperback

Format read: ebook

Series: book 3 of 5 of Beautiful Entourage series

Rating: 18+ for language, sexual content

Genre: New Adult

Goodreads page: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25453139-dark-escort

In the third book of the series we follow Cato and Katrina who have a one night stand and then meet up 2 years later and see that it meant more to Cato then Katrina.

Cato is the player who has a string of one night stands and is the guy who leaves in the middle of the night so when someone does it to him, it does hit his ego. It understandable that he would be frustrated that she doesn’t remember him no matter what he did and I liked how he spent the time to fall for her again and make her fall for him despite her reservations.

Katrina has had to deal with a loss that unfortunately a lot of people go through and I liked how closed off she was to giving love a second chance. I know if it were me I would be hesitant to jump back on the saddle so to speak. But as she falls for Cato, she deals with that struggle with guilt that most people do when moving on.

It was refreshing for the relationship between Cato and Katrina because it wasn’t like the last two books but the explanation for why Katrina didn’t remember him was a little weak. It didn’t really make sense and didn’t seem fully believable.

I found Joey’s character rather annoying but I think that was the point. I don’t think Todd wanted us rooting for Joey in any regard, even if it was out of pity.

I liked that the characters had different issues they needed to work through but there were some grammatical errors that took from the story. The was again a little to fast but it was not enough to not make me not want to read it.
