#5- From Here to You by Jamie McGuire

Out: 8/21

As Darby Dixon sits in a tiny Texas church bathroom on her wedding day holding a positive pregnancy test, she realizes that of all the bad decisions she’s made in her life, marrying her abusive fiancé would be the worst. She’s never been able to stand up for herself, but she’ll sure as hell stand up for her baby. With just the cash she has on hand, she runs to get a bus ticket to the farthest place she can afford. Between her sheer grit and pageant-queen smile, she lands a job as a front desk clerk at the Colorado Springs Hotel. It’s not a glamorous life, but she and her baby are all that matters.

A former Marine, Scott “Trex” Trexler has worked in the most dangerous, corrupt, war-torn places on earth. Now he finally has a chance to return to the last place he’d felt at peace–Colorado Springs, Colorado, to take a new job with the Cheyenne Mountain Complex, a top-secret military installation buried deep within the granite.

The moment Trex walks into the inn, Darby knows he’s dangerous. There’s no way she wants to get involved with another man who seems to be keeping way too many secrets. As charming and devastatingly gorgeous as Trex is, he clearly isn’t telling her everything. But as wildfires rage on the mountain and Darby’s ex-fiancé shows he isn’t so willing to let her go, both she and Trex are soon to find out that what you don’t know absolutely can hurt you.

#3- Richer Than Sin by Meghan March

Out: 8/14

A Riscoff and a Gable can never live happily ever after. Our family feud is the stuff of legends.

Ten years ago, Whitney Gable caught me off guard with her long legs and grab-you-by-the-balls blue eyes.

I didn’t know or care what her name was.

Like any Riscoff worth the family name, I went after what I wanted. We burned like a flash fire until she married another man.

She hates me, and she should.

I objected on her wedding day.

Now she’s home, with those same long legs and man-eater stare, but there’s no ring on her finger.

They say a Riscoff and a Gable can never live happily ever after . . . but I’m not done with Whitney Gable.

I’ll never be done with her.

#1- The Simple Wild by KA Tucker

Out: 8/7

Calla Fletcher wasn’t even two when her mother took her and fled the Alaskan wild, unable to handle the isolation of the extreme, rural lifestyle, leaving behind Calla’s father, Wren Fletcher, in the process. Calla never looked back, and at twenty-six, a busy life in Toronto is all she knows. But when Calla learns that Wren’s days may be numbered, she knows that it’s time to make the long trip back to the remote frontier town where she was born.

She braves the roaming wildlife, the odd daylight hours, the exorbitant prices, and even the occasional—dear God—outhouse, all for the chance to connect with her father: a man who, despite his many faults, she can’t help but care for. While she struggles to adjust to this rugged environment, Jonah—the unkempt, obnoxious, and proud Alaskan pilot who helps keep her father’s charter plane company operational—can’t imagine calling anywhere else home. And he’s clearly waiting with one hand on the throttle to fly this city girl back to where she belongs, convinced that she’s too pampered to handle the wild.

Jonah is probably right, but Calla is determined to prove him wrong. Soon, she finds herself forming an unexpected bond with the burly pilot. As his undercurrent of disapproval dwindles, it’s replaced by friendship—or perhaps something deeper? But Calla is not in Alaska to stay and Jonah will never leave. It would be foolish of her to kindle a romance, to take the same path her parents tried—and failed at—years ago. It’s a simple truth that turns out to be not so simple after all.

Other books coming out this month are Stumbling into Love by Aurora Rose Reynolds (8/1), The Good Luck Charm by Helena Hunting (8/7), Catwoman: Soul Stealer by Sarah J. Maas (8/7), Bishop by Sawyer Bennett (8/14),

#4 – Beautiful Burn by Jamie McGuire

Out: 1/31

Goodreads page:

In the final book of the series, we will follow the final brother, Tyler as he goes through the struggles of finding and falling in love. Like his other brothers he will be the manly-man kind of guy. With this being the final book of the series, Jamie McGuire will likely bring all the brothers back and allow us to say good-bye to them as this may be the last time that we get to see them.

#3 – Appealed by Emma Chase

Out: 1/19

Goodreads page:

In the third book of the series, we follow yet another person in Drew’s life as he tries to work his charm on finding a leading lady in his life, but like the other guys, finds that there is more to finding love then a charming smile. Chase writes great stories that are entertaining and don’t have that way of having you want to cry your eyes out at night. This is a very good thing. Sometimes you just want a book that makes you smile.

In this exciting new series from the author of The Darkest Minds, we follow Etta as she has the ability to travel through time. What book are you most excited to buy this month?

Book review – “Beautiful Sacrifice” by Jamie McGuire

beautiful sacrifice

Format: ebook, paperback
Series: book 3 of 5 of the Maddox Brother series
Rating: 16+ for language, sensual content
Genre: Romance
Goodreads page:

In the third book of the series, we follow Taylor, a whose job is to risk his life everyday and put out fires, as he meets Falyn, a girl in a small town that he can’t seem to get off his mind. As he gets to know her, he sees that there are secrets that she is harboring that may shake everything that he knows.

Falyn comes from a very influential family and on the surface you wonder how she can be so different until you see the layers of her history. You have sympathy for those of class wondering if that saying ‘the grass is greener’ is accurate in some cases.

Taylor is used to being able to stroll into towns and getting his way so when Falyn challenges that, he finds himself treading water, something he’s never done before. She challenges him in ways he’s never experience before and forces him to see that there are consequences to his actions.

After the last two books, I was a little disappointed with this book. The book felt a lot like Beautiful Disaster where the couple butt heads the entire beginning of their relationship then all of a sudden they are in love. Just like how I felt about that book, I feel the same way about this book. I would have liked to have seen a different interaction between the couple (much like how the last two brothers’ story was).

The ‘twist’ or the climax of the story was a bit disappointing. I was able to figure out Falyn connection to Eakins, IL. And then the big ‘conflict’ between Taylor and Falyn needed more. He messes up in a big way and she just forgive him just because she hurt him once. For someone who was strong willed like she was, it felt out of character.

It was an interesting enough read to get through, but certainly not my favorite one of the series. There is still one more story that we are going to get for the brothers and hopefully Tyler’s story is a more intriguing one.

What book are you most excited to read this month?

Book review – “Beautiful Redemption” by Jamie McGuire – good story, though a little repeatitive

beautiful redemption

Format: ebook
Series: book 2 of The Maddox Brothers series
Rating: 18+ for language, sexual content, dark themes
Genre: Romance
Goodreads page:

In the second book of the Maddox brothers, we follow the oldest of the Maddox brothers, Thomas as he tries to move on from losing Camille to his brother Trent and deal with having to lie to his family about what he does for a living. He meets a woman at a bar and they have a one-night stand but things get complicated when that woman is the new transfer, Lisa (Liis), to his unit. Do they have the strength to deny their attraction or will they give in to their feelings?

We had met Thomas in the first of the spinoff books, Beautiful Oblivion, as he is the one that Camille was seeing that she had to keep a secret from the rest of the people in her life. This was quite the twist for people who are fans of the book. In this book, we get to dive deeper into his life and find out what happened after his brother Trent got his happy ever after with Camille instead of him.

He meets Liis on a chance at the bar. Ironically enough (maybe a little TOO ironic) but she not only lives right below him in his apartment building, but she is the new hire that he had transfer from the FBI office in Chicago. He calls on her to help him try and save his youngest brother, Travis, from going to jail. We read about end of this storyline in Walking Disaster (Travis joining the FBI to take down Abby’s father). This part was great to read as we get to see that whole story.

Another positive to the story is that we got to find out more information about the Maddox’s mother and what happened after she died. It helps develop the whole family and show just how much her death affected everyone, especially Thomas, since he was the oldest and had to take care of his brothers because their father checked out mentally for a year.

Liis is dedicated to the FBI and thinks that relationships are out of the question. It’s not until she meets Thomas that she starts rethinking things and wondering if she could really have both. But she does have a problem. She believes that Thomas is still hung up on Camille. Considering how they broken up it makes sense. But no matter how or what Thomas did to try and convince her, she wouldn’t believe it.

This brings us to the downfall to this story. Repetitiveness. This was my problem with Beautiful Disaster. The couple kept having the same fight over and over again and not really building any kind of foundation for a relationship. It made it harder to believe that they could make it as a couple. McGuire didn’t do that in Beautiful Oblivion so I was hopeful that she wouldn’t do that again, but this book had that. Liis and Thomas argue over Camille from start to almost finish and I got bored reading their fighting.

Overall, it is a good look into the Maddox world and into Thomas’s life. While he does get his happy ever after, it’s with someone he never expected and he is glad that she helped him reconnect with his family. The next story will follow one of the twins as they embark on their journey to find love.

Rating: B-
