Excerpt:

Rosie needed to get going. She’d promised to help her friend Nikki move today, so it was time to head back to her apartment, get changed, and be a good friend for the day. She leaned—

A soft, swift curse jerked her head up. Normally, she didn’t hear a ton of cursing in a cemetery. Usually things were quite quiet. A faint grin tugged at her lips. Cursing and cemeteries typically did not go hand in hand. She scanned the narrow path to her right and didn’t see anything. Leaning back, she looked to her left and found the source.

A man knelt on one knee with his back to her as he picked up flowers that had fallen into a puddle left by the recent rainstorm. Even from where she sat, she could see that whatever delicate bouquet he’d carried was ruined.

Placing a hand over her eyes, she squinted in the sunlight as she watched the man rise. He was dressed as if he’d come straight from work. Dark trousers paired with a fitted white dress shirt. The sleeves were rolled up to the elbows, revealing tan forearms. It was late September and New Orleans was still circling the seventh level of hot, currently as humid as Satan’s balls in the afternoon, so she figured if she was close to dying in her black dress, he had to be minutes away from stripping off the shirt.

Still standing with his back to her, he stared down at the ruined flowers. His shoulders were tense as he turned in the other direction. His pace was brisk as he took the flowers over to an old oak tree festooned with Spanish moss. There was a small trash can there, one of the very few in the entire cemetery. He tossed the flowers and then pivoted, quickly disappearing down one of the numerous lanes.

Oh man, that sucked.

Feeling for the guy, she sprang into action. Carefully, she pulled half of the stems free and then leaned forward, placing the remaining in the vase in front of her Herpin tomb. She picked up her keys and as she rose, she slid her purple- framed sunglasses on. Hurrying down the worn path with patchy grass, she turned down the lane she’d seen the guy go down. Luck was on her side, because she saw him near the pyramid tomb. He hung a right there, and feeling a wee bit like a stalker, she trailed behind him.

Of course, she could yell out to him and just hand him the other half of the peonies, but shouting at a stranger in a cemetery just seemed wrong. Shouting in a cemetery at all felt like something her mother would side- eye her over.

And no one side- eyed quite like her mother.

The man made another turn and then stepped out of her line of sight. Holding on to the flowers, she walked passed a tomb with a large cross and then her steps slowed.

She found him.

He was standing before a massive mausoleum, one guarded by two beautifully erected weeping angels, and he was just standing there, as still as those angels, his arms stiff at his sides and his hands closed. She took a step for- ward as her gaze drifted to the name on the mausoleum.

de Vincent.

Her eyes widened and she blurted out, “Holy baby llama.”

The man twisted at the waist, and Rosie was suddenly standing within mere feet of the Devil. .

That was what the gossip magazines called him.

That was what most of her family called him.

Rosie liked to refer to him as in her wildest dreams.

Review: ‘Moonlight Seduction’ by Jennifer Armentrout- Gabe tries to fight his feelings for a childhood friend

Format: e-book, paperback
Format read: e-book
Series: book 1 of Moonlight seduction series
Rating: Language, sexual content, dark themes
Genre: New Adult
Goodreads page: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/36301030-moonlight-seduction

In the second book of the series, we follow the middle boy Gabe as he fights with his feelings for Nikki and trying not to lose control of his life even more. Nikki returns home because of family and she must face the ghosts from her past with Gabe.

I absolutely loved Nikki in this story. She is that ‘every girl’m can relate to’ quality. She has done and said things that we have said or done before. The only thing that I didn’t care for her is how many chances she gives Gabe. Gabe at many times of the story is a major jerk to Nikki. His jerkness revels to Devlin. But she keeps giving him chance after chance. And yeah I want them together but I didn’t like how he treated her at times.

Gabe does a lot of growing up in this book. We know from the last book he got a little bit of a surprise and we get to see the repercussions from it. Gabe has to try and figure out how it fits in his world plus manage all these other elements going on as well. At times he messes up (this happens a lot) and times he redeems himself.

While he’s not s main character yet, this book only made me not like Devlin even more. I am nervous about when we get his book if I will like him enough to read it because he is a MAJOR jerk in this one. Not only to Nikki but to basically everyone.

Review: ‘The Darkest Star’ by Jennifer Armentrout – a suspenseful beginning to what will be an explosive series

Format: e-book, paperback
Format read: e-book arc from Netgalley
Series: book 1 of Origin series
Rating: Language, sensual content
Genre: Young Adult
Goodreads page: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/34221193-the-darkest-star?ac=1&from_search=true

In the first book of the series from Lux world, Evie is your average teenage girl whose world gets thrown upside down when she meets Luc. Luc has a complex past that threatens the simple world that Evie lives in.

Armentrout does it again with her very complex and twisted storyline. It’s been a while since we have seen these characters and this world. For me, I liked it when she repeated the story of what happened on the original series because I forgot a lot of the details. If you just finished the series (whether it be first time or reread) you may get bored with it. But thank you for bearing through it because it is worth it.

Evie is a strong female character but it’s Luc that steals the show. He gives Daemon a run for his money for best book boyfriend in this series. He’s a romantic that will do anything for the girl he loves even if it means staying away from her. While there are times when you may not think a Evie is ‘strong’ there are glimmers of it and you know it’s just the surface of what she can do. I can’t wait to see when that happens.

The story doesn’t necessarily have a cliffhanger but it definitely leaves the door open for more books. There is a lot of questions that I know I would like answered and another book would be amazing. I just hope we don’t have to wait for long for that to happen.

Review

I have a big problem with this book.

ITS WAY TO SHORT!

So we dive into that Wicked world that we love so much but in this one we don’t follow Ivy and Ren but instead Brighton. We had met her in the series and she was what we thought of as a side character. She takes center stage in this story and is the main focus for Caden, The Prince.

I really enjoyed seeing this other side of The Prince because we mostly knew him as this villainous guy set out to destroy the world. So let’s be honest, there is some hate that is lingering there. This story humanizes him in a way and actually makes you root for him. Damn him. I really enjoyed his interactions with Brighton and how he challenges not only her way of thinking but just everything that she does.

I really want to see more from these two and the way that the novella ends leads me to think that I will get my wish. If not, I will be very very  very mad that Armentrout will end the series on this kind of cliffhanger.

EXCERPT:

Did it make you a bad friend if you were completely, a hundred percent envious of that friend? Yes? No? Kind of?

I figured it was somewhere in between.

That’s what I was mulling over as I watched Ivy Morgan brush thick, red curls over her shoulder, laughing at something her boyfriend Ren Owens had said to her.

At least I wasn’t envious of that—their love. Okay, well, that wasn’t entirely true. Pretty sure anyone who was as single as me would be envious of all that warm and fuzzy that was passed back and forth with each long look or casual brush of skin. The two could barely tear their gazes away from one another to eat the dinner we’d grabbed at the cute little diner inside the shopping center on Prytania Street.

I honest to God couldn’t be happier for them. They’d been through so much—way more than two people should ever have to go through to be together, and here they were, stronger and more in love than ever, and they deserved that happiness.

But their epic love story wasn’t the source of a current case of the green-eye monster that was sitting on my shoulder.

Ivy was just such a… badass.

Even right now, relaxed in the chair, surrounded by twinkling Christmas lights with her hand in Ren’s and her belly full of a cheeseburger deluxe and crinkle fries and half of my tater tots, she could kick ass and take names along with addresses, telephone numbers, and social security numbers.

If the proverbial poo hit the fan, you called Ivy or Ren.

If you needed to know what streets Royal intersected with, you called… me. Or if you needed coffee or fresh beignets but were currently busy, you know, saving the world, you’d call me.

The three of us were all members of the Order, a widespread organization that was literally the only thing that stood between mankind and complete, utter enslavement and destruction by the fae. And not the super cute fae found in Disney movies or some crap like that. Humans thought they were on top of the food chain. They were wrong. The fae were.

The only thing pop culture got right about the fae was their slightly pointy ears. That was it. The fae were more than just beings from another world—the Otherworld—they were capable of glamouring their appearance to blend in with humans. But all Order members, even me, were warded at birth against the glamour. We saw through the human façade to the creature that lurked beneath.
