“Jurassic World” chomps out “Inside Out” for the top of the box office

There were two new movies to come out this week and one them gave Jurassic World a run for their money for the top spot, but was unable to top win it at the end.

Jurassic World grabs the top spot for the second straight week bringing in an estimated $102 million. This puts the movie at $398 million domestically and $981 million worldwide. The movie is well on it’s way to shatter the highest box office total and set a new standard for future movies.

Pixar’s latest movie, Inside Out, almost reaches $100 million, but falls just short with an estimated $91 million. This is the second highest opening for a Pixar movie and the highest since 2010’s Toy Story 3. The movie, which currently has a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, should do well at the box office and give Toy Story 3 a run for it’s money for the highest box office for a Pixar movie.

inside out 1

Spy falls down the chart to number three with an estimated $10 million. The movie currently has $74 million domestically and should cross the $100 million mark before the end of it’s run.

Rounding out the top five is San Andreas with an estimated $8.2 million and the other new movie for this week Dope with an estimated $6 million.

For the rest of the box office, you can go here.

There is really only one big movie coming out this week in Ted 2. If it does as well as the first one it’s opening weekend, it should top the list but if it’s not as good then it might fail to grab the spot from Jurassic World.

Review – ‘Jurassic World’ pays homage to the first movie

Starring: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Nick Robinson, Vincent D’Onofrio, Ty Simpkins, Irrfan Khan, Jake Johnson, Omar Sy, BD Wong, Judy Greer, Lauren Lapkus, and Andy Buckley
Director: Colin Trevorrow
Rated: PG-13
Movie Page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0369610/

In this reboot, we go back to Jurassic Park (but is now called Jurassic World) where two brothers go to visit their aunt Helen (Bryce Dallas Howard). While there, they come across a problem. A big one. One of their mutated dinosaurs gets out and it’s up to Owen (Chris Pratt) to take it down with the raptors that he’s been training.

It is no surprise that yet another movie is being rebooted, but this one is one that you can get on board with. While it has a lot of similar plot points as the first movie does, it’s a story in it’s own. The movie touches on some pretty deep stuff, if you are willing to look past the action and thrilling sequences. Helen tries to be the next big thing for her job by messing around with science. This is something that can be related to those who are cloning.

On a less serious note, Chris Pratt once again proves why he is the new ‘it’ male lead for movies. He fights for the dinosaurs and tries to get Helen to see that they are more then just numbers on a spread sheet. He is able to be funny while be a major bad ass.

The finale battle is the best part of the whole movie. The final battle lasts for a good thirty or forty minutes as Owen and Helen try to take down the new dinosaur. There are many times when you think ‘ok this is it’ but nope at least another fifteen minutes of battle ensues.

Of course there are some things that are little ridiculous shall we say. For example, I find it rather hard to believe that Helen is able to run through the jungle and three inch heels. There may have been some problems with the editing. For example you can tell the sequence of how the movie was shot because of the actor’s tan lines. To avoid this it probably would have been best to have all the actors tan so you wouldn’t notice.

The movie pays homage to Jurassic Park and makes up for the disaster that was the two sequels. The action and Chris Pratt is what is going to draw you in, but it’s going to be the dinosaurs that you are going to stay for.

“Jurassic World” breaks four records at the box office

Over the weekend, the reboot to the 1993 hit movie from Steven Speilberg, Jurassic World, was released and shattered box office records.

World opened with $204 million domestically and $511 million worldwide. This of course made the movie the number one movie at the box office, but more importantly, it surpassed the expectations.

But dominating the box office is not all that World was able to do. World was also able four records with its monster opening. World now tops single day Saturday Gross with $69.7 million on Saturday (beating out 2012’s The Avengers), biggest opening movie for a June movie (beating out 2013’s  Man of Steel), it’s the fastest to $100 million (beating out 2012’s The Avengers), and it’s the fastest to $150 million (beating out 2012’s The Avengers).

World also because the 2nd highest Sunday Gross with $52.1 million, the 2nd highest opening of all time, and the 2nd fastest to $200 million.

And all this with only a 70% approval rating from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

This movie just proves that it may not have the story to please the critics, it has the action and the right characters (Chris Pratt + dinosaurs) to make it the perfect kind of movie to see over and over again. It is one of the few movies (outside of a super hero franchise) that you want to see over and over again, and for this day and age, that is hard to do.

The original Jurassic Park opened on almost the same day in 1993 (June 11th) with $47 million. It would go on to gross $357 million and with inflation costs this brings it up to $699.9 million. There is no doubt that World will top Park, essentially proving why they do reboots. But this is one reboot that we all can get on board with.

Top 5 movies coming out in June

movie lists

#5 – Entourage
Starring:  Adrian Grenier, Jeremy Piven, Kevin Connolly, Jerry Ferrara
Out: June 5th

This HBO fan favorite show is going to the big screen (just like in the show) and it’s going to be of epic proportions. This movie has been getting a lot of hype and there is going to be cameo galore. The movie is going to be bigger (and hopefully better) then the TV show as we get to live in nostalgia.

#4 –  Ted 2
Starring:  Liam Neeson, Mark Wahlberg, Amanda Seyfried, Morgan Freeman
Out: June 26th

This may be one of the best comedies or the worst comedies of the year. The first movie was a surprise hit but the last Seth McFarlane movie (A Million Ways to Die in the West) was a bust. This movie will probably be filled with cameos (look out for the Ryan Reynolds one) and will have a lot to prove considering how high the bar is set after the first movie.

#3- Inside Out
Starring:  Diane Lane, Amy Poehler, Kyle MacLachlan, Mindy Kaling
Out: June 19th

In this latest Disney movie, we follow all the emotions in our brain so that we can finally understand how it all works. This movie is going to prove why Disney is the best at what it does because only they can create a movie that any one person at any age can love.

#2- Spy
Starring:  Jude Law, Raad Rawi, Melissa McCarthy, Jessica Chaffin

Out: June 5th

Anything with Melissa McCarthy in is going to be box office gold. Add to the mix that Jason Statham is doing a comedy and you got yourself a date for Friday night. Like any other Paul Feig movie, this is going to have a lot of slap stick humor (mostly in the form of Melissa McCarthy) but with an underlying meaning.

#1- Jurassic World
Starring:  Chris Pratt, Judy Greer, Ty Simpkins, Bryce Dallas Howard
Out: June 12th

Yes it is true. There is another reboot being made to yet another classic. But this one, just might be ok. Steven Speilberg returns back to his movie and brings along the new ‘it’ boy in Chris Pratt. The story looks interesting and with the graphic update that has occurred over the last decade, expect it to be more lifelike then before. This is going to be one movie that you won’t mind paying the extra money to see in IMAX.

What movie are you most excited to see this month?

Top 10 movies coming out in 2015

#10. Goosebumps
Starring: Jack Black, Dylan Minnette, Odeya Rush, Amy Ryan
Out: 8/7

This one is mainly here for just nostalgic reasons. Anyone that grew up in the 90’s is going to be anxiously awaiting for this movie to hit the  big screens. It’s going to have mystery, drama, and a mix of comedy that is going to make this movie the nostalgic film of the year.

#9. Insurgent
Starring: Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Kate Winslet, Ansel Elgort

In the second film of the series, fans will be looking to see if the movie makes up for what the first film lacked, and that’s a development in the story. We hope to see more of Kate Winslet and Jeanine showing that Eurdite is not power-hungry crazies but actually have some merit for their decisions.

#8. Pitch Perfect
Starring: Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Hailee Steinfield, Brittany Snow
Out: 5/15

The first movie was a surprise hit when it the theater, but it shouldn’t really be a surprise. It mixes comedy, heart, and music. This one will have to contest with the first movie and with other sequels that are done. We will see if this movie has what it takes to be better or at least as good as the first one. Either way, it will be worth the chance.

magic mike
#7. Magic Mike XXL
Starring: Channing Tatum, Amber Heard, Matt Bomer, Elizabeth Banks
Out: 7/1

It’s going to be between this one and another movie on this list for the movie that has the largest female audience. Channing Tatum and the guys (less Matthew McConaughey) return and they are looking to light up Miami. Expect to see new dance moves and new costumes and have the fans more and more upset the less amount of time someone is not stripping on the screen.

#6. Jurassic World
Starring: Chris Pratt, Jessica Chastain, Jake Johnson, Vincent D’Onofrio
Out: 6/12

This was quite the surprise when it was announced that a new Jurassic Park movie was being done. Add to the fact you have one of the ‘it’ guys in Chris Pratt leading the movie, you know you will get fans coming out to see it. It is the right time for this movie to be rebooted as it will help to save the franchise from those horrible sequels.

50 shades

#5. Fifty Shades of Grey
Starring: Jamie Dornan, Dakota Johnson, Luke Grimes, Jennifer Ehle
Out: 2/14

This is one of the most anticipated movies of the year and has been since it was annouced. This trilogy by author EL James burned up the charts and surprised the world with it’s BDSM romance story between Christian and Eva. It will be intersting to see how the movie will play out on screen and how creative the director is at keeping it rated R.

furious 7
#4. Furious 7
Starring: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Tyrese, Ludacris
Out: 4/3

Fast cars, handsome leads, and remembering a fallen actor. This movie is going to be a bittersweet ride. Fans of the series will honor Paul Walker by going to see this movie and it should be worth it. When the original stars returned, it took the series to a whole new level and now that Jason Statham has joined on for this movie, it’s certainly going to be one of the top movies by the end of 2015.

#3. Mockingjay pt 2
Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson
Out: 11/20

Many probably wouldn’t put this movie high up on their list for top movies of 2015, but what makes this movie up on this list is the fact that it is the last one. Anyone who has read the book know that the last part of the book is an all out war that is going to change the series. This movie will shape the rest of the series as we say good bye to the Mockingjay.

#2. The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron
Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo
Out: 5/1

Any Marvel movie is expected to be an anticipated movie. Add to the fact that it’s the sequel to the highest grossing film of all time? Yeah it’s a recipe for records to be smashed. Marvel has created this world that is so complex and has so many characters that everyone is dying to get into it.

#1. Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Starring: Adam Driver, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill
Out: 12/18

This is going to be either the movie of a lifetime or the biggest fail. Fans of the series are nervous about Disney taking over of this franchise and adding to the story that reaches generations. Either way, you know that you are going to watch it and see if it’s as good as the other. If you are one of the naysayers, keep this is mind. Hayden Christianson was an epic failure as Anakin Skywalker but that film still succeeded. And as for Disney being a part of it. One word. Marvel. The first movie the released after buying Marvel was The Avengers. Need I say more?
