Hendrix and Elle learn the ugliness of life in ‘Say You’ll Remember Me’ by Katie McGarry

From critically acclaimed author Katie McGarry, comes SAY YOU’LL REMEMBER ME—a story of two people from different worlds pushing themselves, and each other, to get what they deserve!

SAY YOU’LL REMEMBER ME is now available. Grab your copy today!

SAY YOU’LL REMEMBER ME Synopsis:

“Doesn’t matter who did it. Not anymore. I did the time. It’s over.”

When Drix was convicted of a crime–one he didn’t commit–he thought his life was over. But opportunity came with the Second Chance Program, the governor’s newest pet project to get delinquents off the streets, rehabilitated and back into society. Drix knows this is his chance to get his life back on track, even if it means being paraded in front of reporters for a while.

Elle knows she lives a life of privilege. As the governor’s daughter, she can open doors with her name alone. But the expectations and pressure to be someone she isn’t may be too much to handle. She wants to follow her own path, whatever that means.

When Drix and Elle meet, their connection is immediate, but so are their problems. Drix is not the type of boy Elle’s parents have in mind for her, and Elle is not the kind of girl who can understand Drix’s messy life.

But sometimes love can breach all barriers.

Fighting against a society that can’t imagine them together, Drix and Elle must push themselves–Drix to confront the truth of the robbery, and Elle to assert her independence–and each other to finally get what they deserve.

Review

What I love most about Katie McGarry’s books is that she is able to create characters that you may not only be able to see yourself in, but you can feel the emotions that they are feeling with the situations that they find themselves in. This story is no different with Drix and Elle. They meet by chance and neither one of them know or expect the impact that the other will have on their lives.

This is one of those ‘is the grass greener on the other side?’ kind of stories. Both Elle and Drix have had their issues growing up. Drix has had problems with the law while Elle has been forced into a world that she may not have chosen for herself, forced to give up dreams that doesn’t want to give up. With each other, they find strength and they learn that there is a fine line between what is right and wrong.

While McGarry writes about love in her stories, they aren’t always the centerpiece for them. In this story, I think that is the case. She writes about two young people finding their place in the world and how the world works. We have all had to have that day where we see that the world is not beautiful and wonderful and that the people that we love the most tend to be the ones that hurt us the most.

I love Drix in this story and how we see the transformation that he makes. We see that side of him that is going down the road to drugs and alcohol like his father and how a twist of fate can change everything. We see him start to stand up and fight for what he believes in and how his courage is able to give Elle the strength and courage to do the same thing. I love how McGarry can prove that one decision can shape and change the lives of those around them.

The ending is a hard one for me personally to get through and it’s just because I get too attached to characters. This book has a surprise in and it may make you cry (I know I sure did) but it didn’t make me like it any less.

To protect herself, and her vulnerable younger brother, she needs to cut all ties with the club—including Chevy, the boy she’s known and loved her whole life.

Review

We have seen Violet and Chevy’s roller coaster romance from the views of other people and now we finally dive right into it. Chevy is stuck between the two worlds that he loves so much, the Terror and the one football life. But more importantly between his grandfather and his love for Violet and his mom.

The story kicks right off with a big conflict for Chevy and Violet that ultimately dictates the problems that they both have throughout the rest of the book. The war is brewing and only getting worse between the Riot and the Terror but on the plus side we get the answers to a lot of the questions that we have from the other two books.

There is a surprise, but not so much if you read the other two books, in the Pushing the Limits series. We get to see how both worlds are connected and the connection will absolutely blow your mind. I loved how McGarry was able to connect them while keeping them separate at the same time.
I think that the biggest thing that I pulled from this story is that it’s about both Violet and Chevy finding their voice. Chevy, like Violet said a few times throughout that the book, has a hard time making a decision and telling those around him what he wants. Violet is the opposite. She voices her opinion to anyone that will listen. Only problem is that nobody actually listens. That struggle and frustration that she has comes off ten-fold through the pages that you feel just as frustrated as she does.

The writing that Katie McGarry does something that I haven’t seen in to many other authors. She does get you emotionally attached to the characters (as many authors can do) but she can make you feel what the characters feel. That is beyond just writing down words on page. That writing that doesn’t only paint the picture, but grabs at your heart and tells you which way to feel.

I can’t wait to see where Katie McGarry takes us next, but I know that wherever it’s going to be, it’s going to be epic.

CHEVY

The instructions of the English homework I didn’t do hangs out from the top of my folder: Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both.

            Story of my life.

According to my football coach, I chose wrongly on the two crap paths I had to face last week. I just ran into Coach on the way to English, and he ripped into me for my sorry decision-making skills when it came to me choosing to stand up for the Reign of Terror Motorcycle Club instead of a member of my football team.

I didn’t just get my ass chewed out, his tirade made me late for English with no tardy note. Which is great since my English teacher hates late students like I hate riding  my motorcycle in forty degree weather while it rains.

I round the corner, then peek through the small window on the door of my class. Ms. Whitlock stands in front of her desk in her patented white button-down shirt, gray pencil skirt, and dark-rimmed glasses. From the back row, my best friend Razor meets my eyes and shakes his head. Damn. That means she’s in one of her moods where she’s refusing to let anyone in.

I’m not a tail-tucked-between-my-legs type of guy, but this lady is one of the few who can reduce me to begging. If she doesn’t let me in, then she’ll mark me as absent, the front office will think I skipped, and that means I won’t be able to play at tonight’s football game.

The window rattles when I knock. The entire class turns their heads in my direction, but Ms. Whitlock doesn’t. The muscles in my neck tighten. She is one of the hardest core people I know and my grandfather is the president of a motorcycle club. That says something.

She starts for the white board and I knock on the door again. This time, Ms. Whitlock does look my way and she grants me the type of glare reserved for people who kick puppies. I got it. I’m late. I’m the scum of humanity, so let my ass in so I can play football.

There’s this guy in my club, Pigpen. He’s about the same age as Ms. Whitlock, late twenties, and he’s a walking hard-on for this woman even though she would never give him the time of day. He practically runs into walls when she’s around because he’s too focused on checking her out. I don’t see gorgeous—all I see is seriously pissed off and the person standing between me and playing.

Ms. Whitlock points at the clock over her desk. She’s telling me I can wait. If I’m lucky, she’ll open the door after the quiz that I’ll receive a zero on. If I’m not so lucky, she won’t open the door at all.

Two pathetic paths and I could only travel one. Nowhere in that stupid poem did it mention there was good and bad to both paths and that sometimes it’s best not to choose, but to set up camp at the fork and do nothing at all.

I slam my hand into the nearest locker, almost relishing the sting.

            “Feel better?”

A glance across the hallway and I freeze. Doesn’t matter how many times I see her in a day, she still manages to take my breath away.

Review

Excerpt

People near the stage scream and clap and I’m about ready to throw my cell against the wall. Stupid, stupid boy and stupid me for stupidly somewhat liking him and him thinking he can get away with not answering me.

“Give it up for our boy Logan.”

My eyes rip up, go for the stage, and my mind shifts into reverse, fast-forward, rewind, and then that smile that’s associated with the devil slides across my face.

Logan stands strong on the stage. Guitar strapped across his chest. Baseball cap backwards on his black hair. And when he strikes the strings of the guitar, those biceps flex beautifully.

That chord just struck a lot deeper than anyone could have imagined. Past my bones, past my muscles, and it’s created a nice warmth that’s curling around my belly. Liquid warmth.

The logical part of my brain demands that I walk away, but he’s the one that scared me by not answering back. He’s the one that’s causing all these alien emotions stirring in my veins.

Yeah, I shouldn’t kiss Logan. I should definitely leave a boy like that alone. But he returned and he’s the one that climbed onto the stage and is looking addictively sexy with that guitar.

Yep, shouldn’t kiss him, but I already told Rachel, I’m going to kiss the guitarist tonight. Wouldn’t want that one to be a lie, now, would I?
