Book of the Week – ‘Listen to Me’ by Kristen Proby

listen to me

In the first book of a new series by Kristen Proby as a musician falls in love with a restaurant owner. It’s going to be explosive and passionate, obviously. It involves a rock star who will likely come with enough baggage to keep the owner busy. The question will be if he can open up enough to let her help him or if he will continue to hide behind his guitar.

This is the first book of a new series and it’s shaping up to be just as steamy and beautiful as the With Me in Seattle series. That series had a book for everybody and if it’s anything like this book, it might just be the same. Romance novels is all about that passion and finding something that you can believe in. This story should offer that good feeling and get you excited for the rest of the books to come out.

About LISTEN TO ME:

In New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kristen Proby’s brand new series, five best friends open a hot new restaurant, but one of them gets much more than she bargained for when a sexy former rock star walks through the doors—and into her heart.

Seduction is quickly becoming the hottest new restaurant in Portland, and Addison Wade is proud to claim 1/5 of the credit. She’s determined to make it a success and can’t think of a better way to bring in new customers than live music. But when former rock star Jake Keller swaggers through the doors to apply for the weekend gig, she knows she’s in trouble. Addie instantly recognizes him—his posters were plastered all over her bedroom walls in high school—he’s all bad boy…exactly her type and exactly what she doesn’t need.

Jake Keller walked away from the limelight five years ago and yearns to return to what’s always driven him: the music. If he gets to work for a smart-mouthed, funny-as-hell bombshell, all the better. But talking Addie into giving him the job is far easier than persuading her that he wants more than a romp in her bed. Just when she begins to drop her walls, Jake’s past finally catches up with him.

Will Addie be torn apart once again or will Jake be able to convince her to drown out her doubts and listen to her heart?

Review

It would be safe to say that Addison has a time. Musicians. You hear about her past with musicians and how they are moody and how they can’t stay loyal. She has experienced that first hand. That is where her insecurities stem for. She thinks that every musician can’t be loyal and that makes it harder for Jake to prove that he’s not that stereotypical musician. Jake does follow one stereotype. He is moody. He comes from a past that has guilt-ridden him from thinking that he deserves happiness but Addison gets him to see that maybe, just maybe it’s ok to be happy.

I really enjoyed the back and forth between Addison and Jake. The books I love the most are the ones where you laugh around with them and that you don’t realize that you are reading a story, but are engulfed into the world. Proby has you engaged with the characters and their well-being wanting everything to work out for them in the end. The world reminds me of something like a TV show where it may focus on one couple, but you don’t want to skip over the parts that the couple is not in. You enjoy reading that fluff stuff because it’s fun and entertaining and you like those characters just as much.

Addison’s friends are the best! I love that she had a group of girl friends who support her and aren’t catty like they can be in other romance novels. She has her friends help her with the struggles of her love life while they all deal with their own problems. Since it’s a series, it’s pretty clear that these ladies will likely be the stars of the other books and we get to see glimpses of what those books will be like.

I do wish that there was some more shall we say meat to the climax of the story. There is a point where they break up (as it happens with romance novels) but it felt a little forced. Like it was meant to be there because that’s what is expected. I had hope that with their background that it would be more explosive. The reunion though did make up for the break up.

The series off to a great start with Addison and Jake. The next book is going to involve Landon and Cami (Addison’s best friend) and their love story is going to be fun to read, with the introduction that we got from this book. Stay tuned and get ready.

What first caught my attention for this book is the cover. Then when I read what the book was about I was drawn in. The story revolves around two characters whose lives were entwined at one point of their lives and then cross again twelve years later. When they reunite it’s going to be explosive and passionate and a story that will give The Notebook a run for it’s money.

This is the final book of the Crossfire series and we will get to see what happens to Eva and Gideon. They have been through everything imaginable but this story will see them through the last of their troubles. They still have a lot of things that they are working on as individuals but they seem to be strongest when they are together. They are the type of love story that we love to read and we hope that Day will end their story with the best Happy Ever After.

becoming us

#5 – Becoming Us by Allie Everhart
Out: 12/12

In the final book in the Jade series, Garrett is going to be searching for Jade (who got kidnapped at the end of the last book) while trying to figure out what the organization wants from him. This is going to have a lot of drama and a bit of a thrilling mix as Garrett will stop at nothing to get Jade back. Should be interesting to see how things unfold in this final book and see if Garrett and Jade can get their happy ever after.

fractured

#4 –  Fractured by Sydney Landon
Out: 12/20

The first book left fans wanting more and that’s the way to kick off a new series. Lia and Lucian will have to try and move on from what happened in the first book. Lucian fell in love despite trying everything in his power to not do that but it might be to much for Lia. It should be another roller coaster ride as the first one was and another one that you can’t put down.

forever with me

#3 – Forever with Me by Kristen Proby
Out: 12/2
In this book, we follow Domenic the love child of the patriarch of the family as he embarks on his love affair. He was introduced about half way through the series and quickly became a fan favorite as he had all that romantic qualities that we love to read in a leading male.

Wicked AmazonGRSW

#2- Wicked by Jennifer Armentrout
Out: 12/9
In the first book in this new series by Armentrout, we get a mix of thrilling, romance, and supernatural as the lead characters try and understand the magic of New Orleans. Ivy and Ren are going to be our two leads in this story as they try and figure out the murders that is going on in the city. No doubt that that characters are going to be fun to watch as Armentrout is amazing at creating dynamic and fun characters and make a story that readers just can’t put down.

breaking the rules

#1- Breaking the Rules by Katie McGarry
Out: 12/9
This book is falling between the first and second book. We get to see that road trip that Noah and Echo talked about in the second book. This is going to be a great addition to the series as we finally see the part of their relationship that puts the nail in solidifying their relationship. Expect a lot of antics and fun times for these two and the moment that will make you fall more in love with them.

Book review: “Tied with Me” by Kristen Proby – rushed story with no development

tied with me

Format: ebook, paperback
Series: book 6 of 8 of With Me series
Rating: 18+ for language, sexual content
Genre: Romance
Goodreads page: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17201111-tied-with-me

In this novel, we follow Matt as he introduces Nicole to the world of BDSM. He likes to dominate her in the bedroom but not in other aspects of her life. She is surprised by how much she likes it and loves him but can’t come to the terms with the fact that she may not be good enough for him.

This novel is different then the other five books in the series as it touches more on domination and submission. While there were glimpses of the BDSM world in the other books, this one has more of it. However, it didn’t reach the peak that it could have. It felt like it was trying to hard to be like Fifty Shades of Grey and didn’t pay enough attention to the characters or the storyline.

There was a small conflict and it was short lived. Proby just kind of rushed past it not really developing the conflict into a more interesting one. She had the elements of making it intriguing (as to attribute Nicole’s health) but didn’t take advantage of it.

Perhaps the silver lining in the story is the character of Matt. Since we did get to meet him in the earlier books, we did have a basic understanding of the person that he is. We got to see the sweet side of him that always put his family first. It’s nice to see that kind of quality in a man and it made sense that any girl would fall for him and his interests in the bedroom.

This book focused more on the romance and the BDSM and not enough on the storyline or creating characters that fans could get behind. Any kind of development would have helped the story along, without it, it just falls short compared to the other five books in the series so far.

Book review: “Safe with Me” by Kristen Proby – moving story of a man coping with demons from his past

safe with me

Format: ebook, paperback
Series: book 5 of 8 of With Me series
Rating: 18+ for language, sexual content
Genre: Romance
Goodreads page: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17201110-safe-with-me

In this book, we follow Caleb Montgomery as he fights against his own demons as he falls in love with Brynna. She comes from a dark past of her own as she is a witness to her ex-husband’s murder. She moves to Seattle for safety with Caleb leading the charge.

This story offers a different element in the series that we haven’t seen before. It’s thrilling and there is a bit of a mystery element to it as we don’t know what’s going to happen to Caleb and Brynna from day to day. Also, there are kids involved as Brynna has two daughters before she starts hooking up with Caleb.

Caleb has a lot of demons of his own that he’s trying to deal with. He just left the Navy SEALS because the last mission that he worked on caused the death of some the fellow soldiers in his platoon. He, like the other guys in the story, thinks that he’s not good enough for the woman that he loves. In his case, it’s more understandable then some of the other guys. He has nightmares and suffers from PTSD and considering what happened, it makes sense that he would feel that way.

Brynna has never felt more alive then she has when Caleb entered her life. He’s always tried to keep her at a distance but she’s fought hard against him to prove that he is worthy of love and of being happy. The only thing that she’s ever wanted was to feel safe and she’s never felt more safe then being with Caleb.

While this story is a romantic story, it focuses more on the story of Caleb and less on the romance. There are enough scenes to keep you satisfied with the romantic side of the story, but it’s the development of Caleb that really helps with the story. We have learned some things about him from the previous books that helped set this book up and it’s amazing ot watch as he comes to grips with the ghosts of his past.

What Proby does well with the series is the continuity of it. While there is a different focus with each story, you still get glimpses of the other characters that we have met in previous books. In this story, there is twist in the series as we learn something that shakes the entire Montgomery family. It proves that not everything is as perfect as things may appear on the surface.

Overall, this series is a nice follow up to the last book (which is still the best book in the series so far). It touches on a sensitive subject as PTSD and it’s handled in a fashion where it explains how horrible it can be, but not offer to much detail to shy us away from the story.
