About LISTEN TO ME:
In New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kristen Proby’s brand new series, five best friends open a hot new restaurant, but one of them gets much more than she bargained for when a sexy former rock star walks through the doors—and into her heart.
Seduction is quickly becoming the hottest new restaurant in Portland, and Addison Wade is proud to claim 1/5 of the credit. She’s determined to make it a success and can’t think of a better way to bring in new customers than live music. But when former rock star Jake Keller swaggers through the doors to apply for the weekend gig, she knows she’s in trouble. Addie instantly recognizes him—his posters were plastered all over her bedroom walls in high school—he’s all bad boy…exactly her type and exactly what she doesn’t need.
Jake Keller walked away from the limelight five years ago and yearns to return to what’s always driven him: the music. If he gets to work for a smart-mouthed, funny-as-hell bombshell, all the better. But talking Addie into giving him the job is far easier than persuading her that he wants more than a romp in her bed. Just when she begins to drop her walls, Jake’s past finally catches up with him.
Will Addie be torn apart once again or will Jake be able to convince her to drown out her doubts and listen to her heart?
It would be safe to say that Addison has a time. Musicians. You hear about her past with musicians and how they are moody and how they can’t stay loyal. She has experienced that first hand. That is where her insecurities stem for. She thinks that every musician can’t be loyal and that makes it harder for Jake to prove that he’s not that stereotypical musician. Jake does follow one stereotype. He is moody. He comes from a past that has guilt-ridden him from thinking that he deserves happiness but Addison gets him to see that maybe, just maybe it’s ok to be happy.
I really enjoyed the back and forth between Addison and Jake. The books I love the most are the ones where you laugh around with them and that you don’t realize that you are reading a story, but are engulfed into the world. Proby has you engaged with the characters and their well-being wanting everything to work out for them in the end. The world reminds me of something like a TV show where it may focus on one couple, but you don’t want to skip over the parts that the couple is not in. You enjoy reading that fluff stuff because it’s fun and entertaining and you like those characters just as much.
Addison’s friends are the best! I love that she had a group of girl friends who support her and aren’t catty like they can be in other romance novels. She has her friends help her with the struggles of her love life while they all deal with their own problems. Since it’s a series, it’s pretty clear that these ladies will likely be the stars of the other books and we get to see glimpses of what those books will be like.
I do wish that there was some more shall we say meat to the climax of the story. There is a point where they break up (as it happens with romance novels) but it felt a little forced. Like it was meant to be there because that’s what is expected. I had hope that with their background that it would be more explosive. The reunion though did make up for the break up.
The series off to a great start with Addison and Jake. The next book is going to involve Landon and Cami (Addison’s best friend) and their love story is going to be fun to read, with the introduction that we got from this book. Stay tuned and get ready.
