‘Magic Mike XXL’ and ‘Terminator: Genisys’ no match for ‘Jurassic World’ at box office

There were two sequels that were set to come out this week and each one was thought to have a run for the top spot, but instead prove that they are just stereotypical sequels.

Once again Jurassic World is the top movie this weekend bringing in an estimated $30.9 million over the holiday weekend. The movie slowly but surely moving up the charts for the top box office for both the domestic and worldwide box office. It’s currently ranked 4th at $558 million but has a shot to beating out 2012’s The Avengers at $623 million.

Inside Out just misses the top spot for the third straight week bringing in an estimated $30.1 million. It now is past the $200 million mark and is looking to try and have the biggest box office for a Pixar movie, but has a long way to go beat out 2010’s Toy Story 3 at $415 million.

Terminator:Genisys doesn’t do as well as expected, but does beat out the other releases with it’s estimated $28.7 million opening. This isn’t the highest opening, but it’s right around where the other ones premiered at too.

Magic Mike XXL didn’t fare as well as the first one did only bringing in an estimated $11.6 million while Ted 2 round out the top five with an estimated $11 million.

For the rest of the box office, you can go here.

The new Minions movie is set to come out this week and should be expected to do well at the box office, but considering how this week went, it’s all up in the air.

Top 5 movies coming out in July

movie lists

#5 – Terminator: Genisys
Starring: Arnold Scwarzenegger, Emilia Clarke, Jason Clarke, Jai Courtney
Out: July 3rd

I’m not usually a fan of reboots/sequels, but like Jurassic World I was interested to see where this one is going to go. As a fan of the original Terminator movies, I want to see how they are going to reboot it and the additions that they have made certainly make it an interesting movie to see this month.

#4 –Pixels
Starring: Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Monaghan
Out: July 24th

This is going to be the movie that any one who has ever played a video game is going to want to watch, of any age. They have all the classic games that we love (Pac-man and Donkey Kong) and I’m sure they will have some cameo video games too (crossing my fingers for a character from Zelda).

#3 –Minions
Starring: Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Pierre Coffin
Out: July 10th

This is the ‘kid’ movie of the month but is going to be a movie that parents won’t mind seeing with them. It is no surprise that they are going to do a movie about the minions considering they are really what people love about Despicable Me. It will be interesting to see if they can lead a movie on their own or are they just good as secondary characters.

#2 –Magic Mike XXL
Starring: Channing Tatum, Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer, Adam Rodriguez
Out: July 3rd

It’s a sequel that we all can definitely get on board with. The boys come back and are on a road trip to a stripping convention in Miami (because those are the kind of things that exist in the movie universe). This is the second movie of the year that is going to have the female population rushing to the movie theaters to see (the first being Fifty Shades of Grey) as they get to watch the sexy men take off their clothes.

#1 –Ant-Man
Starring: Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Hayley Atwell, Michael Pena, Michael Douglass
Out: July 17th

We are going to dive into another story in the Marvel universe. Paul Rudd joins the family and is going to be one of those stand-out characters. His sarcasm is going to shine in this character and he’s going to be a great addition. The movie is going to have some competition at the box office but it should still do well.

‘Ted 2’ can’t match ‘Jurassic World’ in opening weekend

There was two movies that were set to come out this week with the loveable teddy bear, Ted 2, trying to grab the top spot for the box office, but was unable to take down either Jurassic World or Inside Out.

Jurassic World makes it three straight weeks at the top of the box office bringing in an estimated $54.2 million. The movie now has over $500 million domestically and now holds the record for the fastest movie to get to that mark getting there in 17 days compared to The Avengers (2012) which got there in 23 days. The movie has some ways to go to become the highest grossing film of all time, but at this rate, it’s possible.

Inside Out just misses beating out Jurassic World for the second straight week with it’s estimated $52.1 million. The movie continues to do well, as it should cross over the $200 million mark by the end of next week. At this rate, it should give Toy Story 3 a run for the top Pixar movie, but with Minions set to come out in a few weeks, it might effect it’s chances.

ted 2

The premiere of Ted 2 had high expectations, but was unable to meet them with it’s estimated $33 million opening. The first movie was a surprise hit that opened at $54 million, but this movie not only had a lower opening, but also has lower ratings on Rotten Tomatoes.

The other new movie this week was Max which premiered with an estimated $12.2 million. Rounding out the top five is Spy with an estimated $7.8 million.

For the rest of the box office, you can go here.

There are two big movies set to come out this week with Terminator: Genysis and Magic Mike XXL. These two movies are sure to knock Jurassic World for the top spot next week, as the will battle for the top spot. Magic Mike might have the advantage because of the type of movie that it is.

Top 10 movies coming out in 2015

#10. Goosebumps
Starring: Jack Black, Dylan Minnette, Odeya Rush, Amy Ryan
Out: 8/7

This one is mainly here for just nostalgic reasons. Anyone that grew up in the 90’s is going to be anxiously awaiting for this movie to hit the  big screens. It’s going to have mystery, drama, and a mix of comedy that is going to make this movie the nostalgic film of the year.

#9. Insurgent
Starring: Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Kate Winslet, Ansel Elgort
Out: 3/20

In the second film of the series, fans will be looking to see if the movie makes up for what the first film lacked, and that’s a development in the story. We hope to see more of Kate Winslet and Jeanine showing that Eurdite is not power-hungry crazies but actually have some merit for their decisions.

#8. Pitch Perfect
Starring: Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Hailee Steinfield, Brittany Snow
Out: 5/15

The first movie was a surprise hit when it the theater, but it shouldn’t really be a surprise. It mixes comedy, heart, and music. This one will have to contest with the first movie and with other sequels that are done. We will see if this movie has what it takes to be better or at least as good as the first one. Either way, it will be worth the chance.

magic mike
#7. Magic Mike XXL
Starring: Channing Tatum, Amber Heard, Matt Bomer, Elizabeth Banks
Out: 7/1

It’s going to be between this one and another movie on this list for the movie that has the largest female audience. Channing Tatum and the guys (less Matthew McConaughey) return and they are looking to light up Miami. Expect to see new dance moves and new costumes and have the fans more and more upset the less amount of time someone is not stripping on the screen.

#6. Jurassic World
Starring: Chris Pratt, Jessica Chastain, Jake Johnson, Vincent D’Onofrio
Out: 6/12

This was quite the surprise when it was announced that a new Jurassic Park movie was being done. Add to the fact you have one of the ‘it’ guys in Chris Pratt leading the movie, you know you will get fans coming out to see it. It is the right time for this movie to be rebooted as it will help to save the franchise from those horrible sequels.

50 shades

#5. Fifty Shades of Grey
Starring: Jamie Dornan, Dakota Johnson, Luke Grimes, Jennifer Ehle
Out: 2/14

This is one of the most anticipated movies of the year and has been since it was annouced. This trilogy by author EL James burned up the charts and surprised the world with it’s BDSM romance story between Christian and Eva. It will be intersting to see how the movie will play out on screen and how creative the director is at keeping it rated R.

furious 7
#4. Furious 7
Starring: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Tyrese, Ludacris
Out: 4/3

Fast cars, handsome leads, and remembering a fallen actor. This movie is going to be a bittersweet ride. Fans of the series will honor Paul Walker by going to see this movie and it should be worth it. When the original stars returned, it took the series to a whole new level and now that Jason Statham has joined on for this movie, it’s certainly going to be one of the top movies by the end of 2015.

#3. Mockingjay pt 2
Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson
Out: 11/20

Many probably wouldn’t put this movie high up on their list for top movies of 2015, but what makes this movie up on this list is the fact that it is the last one. Anyone who has read the book know that the last part of the book is an all out war that is going to change the series. This movie will shape the rest of the series as we say good bye to the Mockingjay.

#2. The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron
Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo
Out: 5/1

Any Marvel movie is expected to be an anticipated movie. Add to the fact that it’s the sequel to the highest grossing film of all time? Yeah it’s a recipe for records to be smashed. Marvel has created this world that is so complex and has so many characters that everyone is dying to get into it.

#1. Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Starring: Adam Driver, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill
Out: 12/18

This is going to be either the movie of a lifetime or the biggest fail. Fans of the series are nervous about Disney taking over of this franchise and adding to the story that reaches generations. Either way, you know that you are going to watch it and see if it’s as good as the other. If you are one of the naysayers, keep this is mind. Hayden Christianson was an epic failure as Anakin Skywalker but that film still succeeded. And as for Disney being a part of it. One word. Marvel. The first movie the released after buying Marvel was The Avengers. Need I say more?
