‘Mission Impossible’ takes no ‘Vacation’ at the box office

There were two new movies to come out this week and they were both able to grab the top two spots at the box office. They battled it out for the top spot with the new Mission Impossible movie topping the box office.

Mission: Impossible Rogue is the top movie this weekend with its estimated $56 million opening. This is the fifth movie of the series and had the second best opening just missing beating out the second Mission Impossible. With the high ratings it’s getting it should do well at the box office.

The other movie to premiere is the reboot/sequel in Vacation. The movie premiered with an estimated $14.8 million. The movie had high expectations base on popular the National Lampoon series is but it fell short in comparison.

Ant-Man drops from the top spot with an estimated $12.6 million. The movie now passes by its $130 million budget and probably earned itself a sequel by Marvel’s standards. Minions took in an estimated $12.2 million and the disappointing Pixelstook in $10.4 million. Jurassic World now moves to the number three spot for all time box office and will likely finish there as it would need another billion dollars to catch up to Titanic.

There are five big movies coming out this week that are going to be competing against Mission Impossible for the top spot. The new Marvel reboot Fantastic Four is the favorite for the top spot, but the next Gillian Flynn adaptation Dark Places might be the dark horse. Ricki and the Flash, The Gift, and Shaun the Sheep Movie might be able to crack the top five but probably won’t be seen at the top of the box office.

Review ‘Minions’ : a cute movie that lacks heart

minion poster

Starring: Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Allison Janney, Steve Coogan, Jennifer Saunders, Geoffrey Rush, and Steve Carell

Director: Kyle Balda, Pierre Coffin

Writer: Brian Lynch

Rated: PG

In this prequel, we follow  Stuart, Bob, and Kevin as they embark on a journey to try and find a leader to follow. They think they find the right one in Scarlet Overkill but quickly see that she is not the one for them.

It is no surprise that the Minions would get their own movie considering how popular they are amongst not only the young crowd but the adults as well. They stood as Gru’s helpers in the Despicable Me movies. They are not only the adorable side kick, but scene stealers as they go about their business helping Gru in some unorthodox ways.

On the surface, you would think that this movie would be the one of the better animated films considering how popular the Minions are, but I left the theater feeling disappointed. I had hoped we would learn more about the Minions and get this epic journey that would have that feel good moment that makes you go ‘aww’ but we didn’t. The movie just basically took what we love about them and made it into a two hour movie.

The movie did have its moments that showed the glimmer of the kind of movie I had expected, but overall, I found that it was lacking. I didn’t laugh as much as I had hoped and the cute moments were in short supply. This could all be because I went in with high expectations, so I would suggest that you don’t.

Kids will probably like this movie and maybe they would get more of the jokes that the adults won’t find as funny. Just based on the character it is going to bring in a large crowd, it just makes me wonder if it’s the type of movie you could watch over and over again. For me, it doesn’t have the quality.

‘Pixels’ is no match for ‘Ant-Man’ at the box office

ant man

There where three new movies that came out this week and each one challenged Ant-Man for the top spot of the box office, but none of them were able to beat them.

Ant-Man repeats at the top of the box office with an estimated $24.7 million. This movies the movie past the $100 million mark and should pass it’s $130 million budget. The movie is not going to be breaking any records for the Marvel series but is doing well enough to get fans excited for the character. He is going to have a bigger role in the Universe, which Marvel has confirmed with him appearing in Captain America Civil War.

The new movie that came close to getting the top spot was Pixels with an estimated $24 million. The movie had high expectations based on the cast and the content of the movie, but the bad reviews may have hindered it’s numbers at the box office. The movie only got a 19% approval rating in it’s first weekend at the box office.

Minions falls to the number three spot with an estimated $22 million. The movie is moving up the charts quickly and has a chance to be the top grossing animated film of the year beating out Inside Out.

Rounding out the top five is the other two new movies to come out. The new boxing drama, Southpaw, premiered with an estimated $16.5 million while John Green’s latest adaptation, Paper Towns, premiered with an estimated $12.5 million.

‘Ant-man’ beats out ‘Trainwreck’ at the box office

ant man 2

There were two new movies that were battling it out for the top spot at the box office. One movie was perfect for a girls’ night out and the other was perfect for a boys’ night out. It looks like the boys movie is the top movie of the weekend.

The latest Marvel comic book character to get a movie, Ant-Man, tops the box office with an estimated $58 million. Of course, this is not the highest opening for a Marvel movie, but it is an a good start to possibly a new series for a lesser known character from the Marvel universe. The movie isn’t the worst for a Marvel movie, just beating out 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, but opening weekends doesn’t always equal a bad box office.

Minions falls from the top spot to number two with an estimated $50.2 million. This is a big drop at the box office from last weekend, but that is probably because the little Minions didn’t have any competition last week like they do this week. They are already over the $200 million mark and should make a run for the top grossing movie of the year.

train wreck

The other new movie to come out this weekend was the Amy Schumer movie, Trainwreck. The movie did well bringing in an estimated $30 million, but scored high with Rotten Tomatoes. The movie will continue to do well at the box office as word of mouth will certainly help this movie in the long run.

Rounding out the top five is Inside Out with an estimated $11.6 million and Jurassic World with an estimated $11 million.

For the rest of the box office, you can go here.

This weekend is a big weekend for premieres as there will be four movies vying for that top spot. Pixels and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol have the best shots for the top spot and Paper Towns and Southpaw should make it into the top five.

‘Magic Mike XXL’ and ‘Terminator: Genisys’ no match for ‘Jurassic World’ at box office

jurassic-world-

There were two sequels that were set to come out this week and each one was thought to have a run for the top spot, but instead prove that they are just stereotypical sequels.

Once again Jurassic World is the top movie this weekend bringing in an estimated $30.9 million over the holiday weekend. The movie slowly but surely moving up the charts for the top box office for both the domestic and worldwide box office. It’s currently ranked 4th at $558 million but has a shot to beating out 2012’s The Avengers at $623 million.

Inside Out just misses the top spot for the third straight week bringing in an estimated $30.1 million. It now is past the $200 million mark and is looking to try and have the biggest box office for a Pixar movie, but has a long way to go beat out 2010’s Toy Story 3 at $415 million.

Terminator:Genisys doesn’t do as well as expected, but does beat out the other releases with it’s estimated $28.7 million opening. This isn’t the highest opening, but it’s right around where the other ones premiered at too.

Magic Mike XXL didn’t fare as well as the first one did only bringing in an estimated $11.6 million while Ted 2 round out the top five with an estimated $11 million.

For the rest of the box office, you can go here.

The new Minions movie is set to come out this week and should be expected to do well at the box office, but considering how this week went, it’s all up in the air.

Top 5 movies coming out in July

movie lists

#5 – Terminator: Genisys
Starring: Arnold Scwarzenegger, Emilia Clarke, Jason Clarke, Jai Courtney
Out: July 3rd

I’m not usually a fan of reboots/sequels, but like Jurassic World I was interested to see where this one is going to go. As a fan of the original Terminator movies, I want to see how they are going to reboot it and the additions that they have made certainly make it an interesting movie to see this month.

#4 –Pixels
Starring: Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Monaghan
Out: July 24th

This is going to be the movie that any one who has ever played a video game is going to want to watch, of any age. They have all the classic games that we love (Pac-man and Donkey Kong) and I’m sure they will have some cameo video games too (crossing my fingers for a character from Zelda).

#3 –Minions
Starring: Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Pierre Coffin
Out: July 10th

This is the ‘kid’ movie of the month but is going to be a movie that parents won’t mind seeing with them. It is no surprise that they are going to do a movie about the minions considering they are really what people love about Despicable Me. It will be interesting to see if they can lead a movie on their own or are they just good as secondary characters.

#2 –Magic Mike XXL
Starring: Channing Tatum, Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer, Adam Rodriguez
Out: July 3rd

It’s a sequel that we all can definitely get on board with. The boys come back and are on a road trip to a stripping convention in Miami (because those are the kind of things that exist in the movie universe). This is the second movie of the year that is going to have the female population rushing to the movie theaters to see (the first being Fifty Shades of Grey) as they get to watch the sexy men take off their clothes.

#1 –Ant-Man
Starring: Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Hayley Atwell, Michael Pena, Michael Douglass
Out: July 17th

We are going to dive into another story in the Marvel universe. Paul Rudd joins the family and is going to be one of those stand-out characters. His sarcasm is going to shine in this character and he’s going to be a great addition. The movie is going to have some competition at the box office but it should still do well.
