‘Shadowhunters’ 2×4 – The Shadowhunters try and find a way to save Jace from The Silent Brothers

SHADOWHUNTERS - "Day of Wrath" - No one is safe when the Shadowhunters come up against a new kind of demon in “Day of Wrath,” an all new episode of “Shadowhunters,” airing MONDAY, JANUARY 23 (8:00 – 9:00 PM EDT) on Freeform. (Freeform/Ian Watson) DOMINIC SHERWOOD

In the last episode, Alec suffers from the effects of trying to find Jace while Jace tries to survive living with the werewolves and staying away from the Clave. In this episode, titled ‘Day of Wrath’, The Clave begin their trial with Jace while the others try and find a way to help him. Clary is given an opportunity to take a step back while Simon continues to try and find Camille before Raphael gets killed by Victor.

This has a lot going on that ties some ends from previous shows and making some new ties for the rest of the season and beyond. Simon is still on the hunt to find Camille but little does he know that the answer to finding her is right in his hands. In that box. With the help of Raphael they are able to open the box and have the key to summon Camille.

We see a very ugly side to The Clave and more importantly to Victor. He decides to torture Raphael and threaten his life in order to find Camille. And of course, his way around it is to call it ‘motivation’. Add to the fact that he basically made sure that Jace was found guilty in the City of Bones just so that he can recommend that he spend the rest of his life in prison.
True to form, Jocelyn wants to get away and wants to take Clary with her. Clary sees the appeal in running but knows that her place as at the Clave. Especially after she goes on her first hunt with Alec and Izzy and sees how much she likes it.

While in prison, Jace faces the choices of his past. He wonders if he will ever get past his feelings for Clary and demands that she stays away. He sees a familiar face with Hodge and he makes him see that some choices will never leave him. But by the end of the show he is able to prove to Victor that he shouldn’t be in jail when he fights off Valentine and then refuses to go with him.

We see that maybe the show is not going to be exactly like the book. I had wondered because the fans of the book will know things before everyone else. This week we see Alec killing Jocelyn (with a demon inside of him) and essentially breaking a part of Clary with her. I also think it’s safe to say that the relationship between them will only being more strained now that she is dead.

In the next episode, Clary tries to bring back her mom despite Jace telling her that it’s a bad idea.

‘Shadowhunters’ 2×3 – Jace fights through the city to try and save Alec

shadowhunters-2_3_1

Shadowhunters comes back with a vengeance as a war is brewing between Valentine and his new army and the Shadowhunters. But it doesn’t stop there as there is a war brewing between Clary and essentially everyone else in her life. Alec wants to find Jace and bring him back while her mom wants to kill him. That’s right, kill her own son.

In the last episode, Clary trying to find Jace before the Clave kill him and Simon gets a task at spying on the werewolves for the new Clave boss, Victor. In this episode, titled ‘Parabatai Lost’, Alec suffers from the effects of trying to find Jace while Jace tries to survive living with the werewolves and staying away from the Clave.

The last show had quite the epic finale as Jace and Clary escape Valentine’s ship only to find themselves a beach apart. Jace finds himself in deep water (pun intended) when he is found next to a dead body. He goes on the run only to find out that the woman he found is a dead werewolf, who they think he killed.

Isabelle is desperate to try and help Alec and she uses Magnus as her backup. Nothing he does seems to work because they know that the only way that he can wake up is with Jace’s help. Problem is that Jace is wanted by basically the whole city of New York. The only way that she has a chance to help is to make a deal with the last person she wants to, Victor.

Things don’t look up for Simon as he learns that his mom is missing. Only gets worse when Raphael threatens Simon to find Camille or he will hurt his mom. Even though he wanted to help Clary I don’t think that he thought that all this was going to happen. Him becoming a vampire and having his family threatened by other vampires.

Jace fights his way through the city, literally, as he fights off the werewolf pack to try and get to Alec. At the end, there is a very sad and powerful scene where Jace helps Alec and we see the connection between the two of them and how it’s deeper then brotherhood and parabatai.

In the next episode, The Clave begin their trial with Jace while the others try and find a way to help him.

Review: ‘Lady Midnight’ by Cassandra Clare – Emma and Julian have to fight against a new threat

lady midnight

Format: e-book, paperback, hard cover
Format read: e-book
Series: book 1 of The Dark Artifices series
Rating: 14+ sensual content, graphic scenes
Genre: Young Adult

Before we get started with this, just want to give fair warning. There are minor spoilers for the series but if you have read all the books, then it won’t be. The things I hint at are fairly obvious (especially if you read The Shadowhunter Academy and City of Heavenly Fire). With that said, let’s dive in.

The world of Shadowhunters is not yet over and it doesn’t look like it’s going to be over for a long time. In the first book of the spin-off series, The Dark Artifices, we follow the story of two characters that we met at the end of the sixth Mortal Instruments book, Julian and Emma. At the time they were 12 years old, but you could already see a budding story forming between the two of them.

Flash foward seven years. The pair are now 19 years old and in charge of running the Institute. Julian has more responsibility then a young man should have had and the pressure weighs heavily on him. He counts on Emma, his parabatai, to help alleviate some of the pressure, but as a new threat introduces itself, he finds that being around Emma only makes it worse.

The Shadowhunters growing up basically reciting, The Law is tough, but it is the Law. The hardest rule that he has had to follow is not falling in love with his parabatai. Being a Shadowhunter fan, I knew this rule since the beginning of the series but I could never fully understand why. Why does it matter if you romantically love them? Wouldn’t that make you better, stronger? This book finally dives into the problems that stem from falling in love with your parabatai as it looks like it’s the center of the new threat.

Julian Blackthorn is quickly becoming one of my favorite characters in the series. I relate to him on a lot of levels (in regards to having to grow up before being ready and being the one that has to be strong for everyone, despite). Julian is a romantic at heart but struggles with his feelings for Emma while trying to do right by his family. Emma causes him to be reckless and I love to see those moments that he throws caution to the wind and acts like a teenager. Young love gives hope and them together brings a lot of hope (along with heartbreak) with it.

Of course it wouldn’t be an epic story without an epic love story. And this one between Emma and Julian? Yeah WAY more epic than Jace and Clary. Don’t get me wrong, they had a lot of obstacles and what not, but this whole thing with Emma and Julian, there are literally no words to describe how beautiful their love is. It’s what young love is supposed to give you, hope that the world is not as messed up as you know it to be. And that scene on the beach? The best scene between the two of them. When you read it, you will know why.

Now it wouldn’t be a Shadowhunter series without something catastrophic about to happen. In this book, it involves a string of murders that are linked to Emma’s parents’ death. Of course, she is going to want to find out the truth and she quickly sees that it’s bigger than she imagined it. The plot is going to twist, people are going to get betrayed, lines will be crossed. The question will remain who will be there at the end and what side they are going to be on.

The ending? Oh my God. There are no words to describe the ending. And I’m not even talking about the climax. Oh no. I am talking about those three chapters after the ending. The part where all my hopes and dreams go right down the tubes and in a way that I just can’t swallow. I know that it’s going to be tough to come back from the ending and I just hope that when the whole series is done, that it turns out the way that I want it to.

I love how in depth that this whole Shadowhunter story has become. There has been a lot of successful series that have come from the original Mortal Instruments. I thought when we got to City of Heavenly Fire we finally got to a place where we could be like ‘ok I’m good now’. But no, this book begins a whole new can of worms and I can’t wait to see where Clare takes us.

Clare’s world is often compared to the kind of world that JK Rowling created with Harry Potter. Unlike that world, she didn’t get the same kind of success with the movies, but she is finding success with the show Shadowhunters on ABC Freeform. For me, the stories are different but they are the same. They both involve so many different levels and while it is a story of fantasy and fiction, it is plausible enough to be true. For me, this is the perfect find of fantasy I like to read because when I want to escape, I want to escape into a world that CAN happen, not into a world that is nonexistent.

Alec has to deal with the consequences of his actions, which include his parents being mad at him for wanting to kiss a warlock.

As we have started to see, Jace has major daddy issues and it’s only going to be more complicated now that he’s training with him. On the plus side, Jocelyn is awake and will be able to help them with the war against Valentine.

Jace’s obsession with his parents boils over in this episode. The more that he tries to understand what happened, the further he falls down the rabbit hole. He tries to take down Valentine, but when it comes time to do it, he can’t. Instead, he makes a crazy and rash decision that he decides to go away with Valentine in order to try and get rid of the darkness inside of him. Or at least control it.

Clary is busy with her own mission. With the help of Simon and Isabelle, they get Camilla out of her punishment and have her help them find the Book of White so that they can wake up Jocelyn. Jocelyn is the key to taking down Valentine. But we are going to have to wait for that to happen.

Jace and Clary try and fail to not let the fact that they are siblings bother them. There is major awkward tension between the two of them and while Clary tries to fix it, Jace only makes it worse as he tries to ignore it. He is however able to make up with Alec so not everything went bad in this episode.

In Shadowhunter news, Jace/Clary/Magnus go and see Ragnor Fell and try to get him to reverse the curse on Jocelyn. But the mission goes south as Ragnor dies and Jace thinks that Lydia is the leak. Problem is going to be to prove it. If she is the leak, she will be smart enough to hide her tracks and not let them figure it out. Magnus is able to find the book, but it’s with an unlikely source. Camille. The leak is revealed and it’s not who you think it would be.

‘Shadowhunters’ 1×11 – Clary and Jace begin their hunt to find her mother

shadowhunters 1_11

In this week’s episode, titled ‘Blood calls to Blood Introverted’, Jace tries to understand what happened with his father, while the rest of the Shadowhunters try and figure out how to help Isabelle.
The world is on a tailspin as Michael Wayland is alive. The people he left behind can’t believe it and are trying to understand it. Clary is not sure if she likes him especially considering the falcon story that Jace had told her about him. And Michael doesn’t like that Clary is making Jace soft. So what does Michael do, he creates a wedge, a subtle one, between Jace and Clary. He won’t need to worry about that long as at the end he reveals that he is really Valentine and that Jace and Clary are siblings.
If you are a fan of the book, you already knew this twist, but if you were like me, I was still surprised by it. I didn’t know if they would work it into the book considering the theming of it, but I was surprised by the delivery.
Isabelle is in a world of trouble as the Clave are looking to make an example out of her. Lydia and Alec are trying to help her but Lydia is more concerned about saving her job. She relies on the help of Magnus to help get her out of this sticky situation. If she doesn’t give up the cup in the next 24 she will be exiled.

‘Shadowhunters’ 1×9 – Simon adjusts to his new life

shadowhunters 1_9

In this week’s episode, titled ‘Rise Up’, Simon adjusts to life as a vampire, while the Shadowhunters prepare for war against Valentine. The last episode had each of the Shadowhunters dealing with the decisions of their pasts while they try to make better ones for the future. Isabelle gets caught for her relationship with the Elf, Jace and Clary get closer and help Simon, but it’s yet another rule that they break to do that. Alec makes a bold decision and decides to marry Lydia so that he can move up in The Clave. Decision like a true politician.

The turn goes deeper in this show as Alec continues to turn against Isabelle and Alec as he helps Lydia by wanting to turn in Clary. Jace is not about that letting that happen as he tells Clary to hide out and stay away from the Clave. He has Magnus help him out so that he can take the Cup away from the Institute and hide it somewhere. He doesn’t trust the Clave especially now that Alec is infatuated with the idea of moving up in politics. The only time he shows remorse for his decision is when Magnus finds out.

Simon’s transformation into vampire-dom is not as smoothly as Clary had hoped it would be. He is furious with her for not killing him and making him a vampire. He pledges his loyalty to Raphael and joins their clan in they help the Shadowhunters. Jace and Alec finally have it out and it leads to Alec choosing the Clave over Jace and Isabelle. The bed has now been made, and now he will have to sleep in it.

In the next episode, Clary goes to a parallel universe to try and find her father where Alec discovers he might have chosen wrong between Jace and Lydia.
