About UNDONE (Unknown Trilogy #3):

Amber Tate never dreamed their heart-wrenching escape from the enemy’s attack would lead them to the most beautiful place she’s ever seen. Like everywhere else in the world, Elmendorf military base in Alaska has been taken over, but it’s time to take it back—all of it—one base, one city at a time. After losing so much, Amber clings to the one precious person she has left, and vows to sacrifice everything to help save the Earth.

Remy Haines is a lover, not a fighter, so when she finds herself in enemy territory, expected to feign allegiance while gathering intel for the rebel cause, she’s never been more out of her element. Tensions only increase when her feelings for Jacob “Tater” Tate won’t go away, and the enemy’s leader takes an interest in her. She’s torn between what her heart wants, and what she knows she should do. As for what her body needs…well, it’s always had a mind of its own.

EXCERPT:

Did he ever think of our night together in the tent?

I did.

Without a doubt, I’d been tipsy, but I remembered everything. For so many years there was tension between us. It started as annoyance, my best friend’s older brother who always acted like a douche. Then, after he joined the Army and came back to visit, it was like he’d matured just enough to lose that obnoxious edge and I realized for the first time how sexy he was. I wanted him. Back then, pursuing guys had been my vice, but I knew Amber might be weirded out by it.

When I thought back to that night at the nature reserve…it was really our last night of true freedom and happiness. It’s strange to think we were happy, especially since our parents had been taken prisoners at that point, and we’d watched his grandfather be killed, but we still had hope. We thought we’d get our parents back. We didn’t have any idea just how horrible things were. Or that aliens were real.

I rubbed the prickly hairs on my arms down and took another bite. I didn’t want to think about that night in the tent. The sound of Tater’s laughter. His wide smile. The way the neck of my loose shirt had slid down while I was arranging my sleeping bag and laughing drunkenly. His warm mouth as he kissed me on my exposed shoulder…when I turned to him, Tater had never looked more serious. It had been a look of question, like, “Is this all right?” And I’d responded by sliding my hand behind his neck and pulling him down on top of me.

Now he never smiled or laughed.

“How are things in the fields?” I asked him.

Tater gave a single shrug, not looking up or saying a word.

“If you’re wondering,” Linette said with spite, “Things are amazing with the livestock. I can fill a bucket with milk in record time, and helped a mama swine birth seven piglets yesterday. I’m a regular fucking Farmer Jane.”

Before I could respond, Tater whispered, “I need you to get us a radio.”

Our end of the table went silent and still. I glanced at the guards, who were surveying the room with bland expressions, then I forced another bite into my mouth. When I looked up again, Linette had that crazed look in her eyes, staring straight ahead. Her strategizing look.

“Are there cameras in the room where you teach?” she asked.

“I don’t know,” I whispered.

“How can you not know?” she asked, annoyed. “Look today.”

“Okay, but there’s no way I can take anything. I’m never alone.”

“The guards cannot be staring at you the entire time.” Linette nodded to the bag at my side. “Slip it in there.”

“Remy,” Tater said to his bowl. “If you can get your hands on anything electronic, we can try to use it at night to send or receive signals, and you can return it in the morning.”

My stomach was roiling at the idea. There’s a reason I didn’t join the military. Stealth and danger were not my things. But I was the only one with access to the palace.

“I’ll look,” I promised.

“Have you been alone with him yet?” Linette asked.

My innards seized at this, churning my breakfast. I felt both of their eyes on me as I stared at the pasty contents in my bowl and minutely shook my head.

“Make it happen,” she demanded.

From the corner of my eye it looked like Tater was holding his spoon so hard he might bend it in his fist. I reached out with my leg as far as I could under the table until my foot touched his. The contact, even through our shoes, sent blood whooshing to every nerve in my body. I watched as his hand relaxed on the spoon, and he pressed his foot to mine. Our eyes never met.

We were quiet as we finished.

“Did Remy tell you her fantastically stupid idea to try and teach the girls in our room after hours?”

Tater’s eyes flew up to me, scorching me, and I looked at the guard again. When I found one of them staring straight at me, my demeanor changed to demure and I gave the guard a soft smile before looking back down. From the corner of my eye I saw Tater’s hands clench into fists again, and he brought them under the table to his lap.

“Rem…” Tater’s voice was filled with warning.

“It’s fine,” I whispered, grabbing my tray and standing. “Don’t worry.”

I wished Linette hadn’t told him that. As if he didn’t have enough crap on his mind. I sent her a glare, which she returned, and I caught one last look of Tater’s stiff form, hands in his lap, knee bouncing and jaw locked. I wished so badly I could hug him and try to calm him. But all I could do was walk away.

Review

Wendy Higgins does it agin. This series is one that you won’t be able to put down. If you can believe it, I think that it’s better then the Sweet series

It’s reminiscent of Hunger Games, Divergent, and the Legend trilogies. It has lies, betrayal, romance, and twists and turns that you won’t see coming. The heroine Amber is a character that you are rooting from the first page, even though there are times that you want to scream at her. Amber is strong and weak at the same time and these are the kinds of characters that I love reading about it dystopian stories. A character I can see myself in.

Rylen is forbidden love and who doesn’t love that kind of love. He has his own bits and pieces going on but the relationship between him and Amber is of love on many levels. He loves her as a friend, as a sister, but that changes when the stakes are risen. I love that he challenges Amber and forces her to become the person that she needs to be.

Each book gets you more and more addicted that you don’t want it to end. What I love most about the series is how easily it can be related to things that are going on in today’s world. We kind in an ugly and broken world, but the story shows that there can be beauty and something worth fighting for. You just have to look.

Top 5 books coming out in May

sinful love

#5 – Sinful Love by Lauren Blakely

Out: 3/29

In the next book of the series, we follow Michael Sloane as he has to open up to the idea of not only admitting he has emotions, but also to the idea of love. He is faced with ghosts from his past that he must confront whether or not he wants to.

The series is a quick but fun read. It has a different couple in each book so you don’t have to worry about waiting for all the books to come out before reading the series (because that’s how I work with some series). While some of the story can be considered ‘cookie-cutter’ I enjoy seeing where the story and Blakely is able to create characters that you just can’t help but root for.

where lightning strikes

#4 – Where Lightning Strikes by AL Jackson

Out: 3/22

In the next book of the series, we follow Tamar King who thought that she was safe inside her own world, until she met Lyrik and he turned her whole world upside down. He forces her to come back to reality and makes her see that sometimes real life can be better than the one you dream up in your head.

The Bleeding Stars series is a series that you can’t help but fall in love with right from the beginning. It does follow a new couple with each book so it helps with following the series. The first two books (and will likely happen in this book) has a lot of passion and romance that mike make you blush if you are in public so be aware.

the great hunt

#3 – The Great Hunt by Wendy Higgins

Out: 3/8

In the first book of a new series, we get adventure, love, and twists and turns around every corner. The story is certainly going to grab you right from the beginning and not let you go until the final book comes out.

I started reading Higgins after a friend recommended reading her last series. I was hesitant at first because I wasn’t sure I would like the paranormal, but I was hooked after one chapter. I became invested with the series and Higgins quickly became that one-click buy author for me. This book is going to be exciting and we know that she can successful write a paranormal series that everyone can love.

walk the edge

#2 – Walk the Edge by Katie McGarry

Out: 3/29

In the next book of the series, we follow Razor as he struggles with his commitment to the Reign of Terror motorcycle club and his commitment to his friends. He knows that Breanna is not good enough for him but when she needs him, he will stop at nothing to make sure that she is safe.

McGarry’s stories are ones that hold you and never let you go. You know that some stuff is going to happen because that is life, but you know that in the end everything will be ok (even if you don’t like it). What I love the most about her books, is that they are the types of books that you will be reading at night and say ‘ok one more chapter’ ten times in a row. They are the ones that sneak up on you and you can’t help but want to read it all in one day.

lady midnight

#1 – Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare

Out: 3/8

In the first book of a new spin-off from The Mortal Instruments, we move 5 years from where that series ended. This time we jump into the Blackthorn family and Julian and Emma. They have agreed to be parabatai even though Julian has had a crush on Emma their whole lives. They now go through training to be a Shadowhunter. When Julian’s brother, Mark, comes back from the faeries he has no memory of them and they have to decide if whether or not they can trust him.

This is one of the most anticipated books of the year (at least for me) ever since Clare announced that she was doing another spin-off series. I have gone back and forth with wanting to wait until the whole series is out before reading, but I don’t know if I have the willpower. The series are so in depth and the world is so consuming, that it’s hard to wait. This series is quickly becoming a world like Harry Potter where you want to jump into it and live there forever.

What book are you most excited to read this month?

Book Review – “Sweet Reckoning” by Wendy Higgins – finale battle of good vs. evil

sweet reckoning

Format: ebook, paperback
Series: book 3 of 3 of Sweet trilogy
Rating: 14+ for sensual content, themes, sexual content
Genre: Young Adult
Goodreads page: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16007855-sweet-reckoning

In the finale book in the series, Anna and her father continue to recruit Nephilims so that when the final battle against the Dukes happens, they will be able to win.

The best part of the book is Kaiden and Anna’s relationship. Now that they are together, they are both happy and not making each other miserable. Their relationship certainly takes center stage in the book because it is what helps give Anna the strength to do what she needs to do and Kaiden the strength to stand up to his father.

We do get to see more of Jay in this story as he continues his relationship with Marna. I for one was happy because I liked his relationship with Anna in the first book and was sad that his character pretty much got cut out of the 2nd book.

Again, the story is a little slow to begin but when it picks up, it’s smooth sailing until the end. Though there were times that some scenes or problems were rushed and it would have been interesting to see these things play out. For example, the whole Ginger/Marna relationship. They have a fight in the story and it’s surprising that Ginger didn’t fight more because that is the person that I see her as.

The battle was a big battle between the good and the bad angels and the war of whether or not they will end up in Heaven or Hell. Usually with book series, there is this shocking moment in the story that changes things and has you go WTF. This book had a bit of a twist, but not one that took me by surprise.

This book certainly made up for the last book and ended the story in a nice way. The lack of casualties and that SHOCKING moment is what made me not like it so much. It’s a decent trilogy to read if you want a quick fun read.

What do you think of the book?

Book Review – “Sweet Peril” by Wendy Higgins – slow 2nd book that sets up for a big finale

sweet peril

Format: ebook, paperback
Series: book 2 of 3 of Sweet trilogy
Rating: 14+ for sensual content, theme
Genre: Young Adult
Goodreads page: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15768191-sweet-peril

In the 2nd book in the series, Anna comes to grips with her job as the one to end this war with the Nephilim and the dukes as her father tries and get allies so that they can wage war.

The story is slow to begin but has quite and interesting ending. Not to spoil anything, but the ending was quite surprising but fitting for what is going on in the story. War is ugly and the story shows that anything can happen in war.

The climax to Anna and Kaiden’s relationship finally happens in this book as both characters finally come to grips with their feelings for one another and do something about it. There is a lot of build up in the book and there will be a time when you get annoyed with Anna because she basically becomes obsessed with Kaiden. While this may sound bad, it’s not. Higgins really captures that feeling of how a 17 year old would feel about their first love and especially one that never really ended.

I didn’t like the fact that Patti and Anna’s two friends basically are nonexistent in the story. You get some mentions of the characters, but they are basically not in the book at all. It’s sad to not see this characters anymore because they were such a big part of Anna’s life. I know it was probably done in the interest of keeping the story in tact but it would have been nice to see them every once in a while.

While overall the book is slow, it does certainly set up to what’s going to be an exciting final book in the trilogy. So when reading this book just keep that in mind.

What do you think of the book?

Book Review – “Sweet Evil” by Wendy Higgins – a good start for a potentially good series

sweet evil

Format: ebook, paperback

Series: book of 1 of 3 of Sweet trilogy

Rating: 14+ for language, sensual content

Genre: Young Adult

Goodreads page: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/11808950-sweet-evil

In this new series, we follow 16 year old Anna who meets Kaiden (the drummer of a local band) and finds that he holds the answers to the questions that she’s had since she was born. She dives into the world of demons, angels, and Nephilim and quickly sees that she is caught in the crossfire as she is tugged to be good and bad.

Like with many new stories, it is a bit slow to start at the beginning, but it picks up in the middle and doesn’t slow down until the end. The plot is very interesting and Higgins does a great job at explaining the world of Demons and how Dukes work with the seven deadly sins. I like the analogies with religion and God and how it entwines with the story.

I had some problems with Anna’s character. She is a little too trusting for my taste. The second that she meets Kaiden she’s not only attracted to him, but trusts him completely. Considering that he’s working for the demons, you would think she would have been more skeptical. And when she meets her father in prison instead of being angry for not having in her life for 16 years, she just loves him immediately and trusts him blindly.

Also, I didn’t like the fact that once Anna learned about her past, Jay and Veronica basically become nonexistent. They are in a few scenes throughout the rest of the book, but it felt forced. You would think that they would hang out more or that Jay and Veronica would be questioning why Anna is changing so drastically so suddenly.

And of course what would a book about an imminent war be without a little bit of romance. Kaiden (who is the son of Lust ironically enough) falls for Anna and it’s hard for him to admit it because of who is father is. It’s that classic forbidden romance that you can’t help but root for because as much as you don’t want to like Kaiden, you can’t help but love him.

This is a great start to a new series that will have you wondering what is going to happen from moment to moment. It’s got a few bumps that need to get ironed out, but if Higgins can do this in the next two books, this could be the makings of a beautiful series.
